SPINDRIFT 2 WINS THE TRANSAT QUÉBEC - SAINT-MALO AND BEATS LOÏCK PEYRON’S RECORD !

Zenith, official timekeeper of Spindrift racing, is proud to salute the victory of the world’s largest racing trimaran, Spindrift 2. After six days of intense sailing, Dona Bertareli, Yann Guichard and the entire crew of the Maxi-Trimaran Spindrift 2 have also beaten the record for the Transat Québec – Saint-Malo that had been held for 20 years by Loïck Peyron. This is a new feat for the trimaran helmed by Yann Guichard.

Yann Guichard, skipper of Spindrift 2: “We are delighted to have won this race. At the start we were imagining that we might make it in less than seven days but to complete it in six is a really great time. The entire team did a great job. I had taken part in the Transat in 2004, but unfortunately had to give up in the middle of the Atlantic, so to move on by both completing it and also beating the record is wonderful.”

Dona Bertarelli, helmsman-trimmer: “It was fantastic on both sporting and personal levels. I had been wanting to do the Transat Québec – Saint-Malo for several years already. The race is magnificent, the start in Quebec, the St. Lawrence river, passing all the legendary historical landmarks such as the Rocher Percé (Pierced Rock), Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Fastnet, and then the arrival here in Saint-Malo: there are several races within the race.”

Aldo Magada, President and CEO Zenith:  “We wish to congratulate the entire Spindrift team and especially Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard for this fantastic record. We are proud of you all! This is a well-deserved reward for the excellence and precision of their performance.”

That same precision and performance are symbolised on crew members’ wrists by the Zenith El Primero Stratos Spindrift watch that once again played its part in the feats accomplished by the Spindrift racing team.

TRANSAT QUÉBEC – SAINT-MALO

The Transat Québec – Saint-Malo is the oldest nonstop transatlantic crewed race sailed from west to east. Since 1984, the competition has been taking place every four years, which makes 2016 its 9th edition. The first Transat was organised in 1984 to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the first voyage of Jacques Cartier (a navigator and explorer from Saint-Malo) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1534. The journey from Québec to Saint-Malo stretches across 2,897 miles (5,365 km).

LOÏCK PERRON’S RECORD

In 1996, Loïck Peyron set the record for the Transat Québec – Saint-Malo by making the crossing in seven days, 20 hours and 24 minutes. It held for 20 years, highlighting the exceptional performance now achieved by Spindrift 2.
