Going Deep on Breguet’s Tourbillon Day Anniversary Celebration

Exclusive Video: Going Deep on Breguet’s Tourbillon Day Anniversary Celebration

Last month, we spoke with Breguet CEO Gregory Kissling to discuss the watchmaker’s new models honoring the 225th anniversary of the tourbillon and learned more about the brand’s past while getting a glimpse at its future.

Abraham-Louis Breguet is credited with creating and patenting a multitude of ingenious watchmaking innovations in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. But the tourbillon is arguably his most dramatic and inventive.

The quintet of tourbillon-equipped timepieces introduced at the end of last month by Breguet carried obvious heritage inspiration, but were also intended to prove the watchmaker’s ability to produce variant executions of the mechanism, with different frequencies, materials, and design approaches.

However, whether in proprietary Breguet Gold or platinum, the Classique Tourbillon 7357 stands out. That’s because the 7357 not only takes on the intimidating history of the mechanism itself but also the codes and format of Breguet’s first tourbillon-equipped wristwatch, the Reference 3350, from 1988.

We were honored to spend some time with Breguet CEO Gregory Kissling to discuss the watchmaker’s new models honoring the 225th anniversary of the tourbillon. The insights he shares in this video not only speak to recognizing the heritage of the complication invented by the brand’s founder, but also to Montres Breguet’s ability to continue to improve its mastery of the gravity-fighting mechanism.

According to Kissling, this was a rather challenging task to take on: The intent was to innovate without introducing an overabundance of change. So, the innovations and modernity of slimness (just over 9mm), improved accuracy (on average about +/- 2 seconds per day), and increased magnetic resistance (up to 600 gauss), among many others, are artfully balanced by details like the maison’s exquisite decoration and finishing practices (including a specially developed anniversary guilloche pattern) and a vintage-inspired 35mm case size, for example.

Enjoy the video, which also includes a discussion of the complicated romanticism of the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887 from the new collection.
