Our Favorite Instagram Moments Of 2020

Watchonista looks back over a year of Instagram posts and selects the moments that made the team smile most.

When we scrolled through our 2020 Instagram feed, we almost surprised ourselves with all the work we’ve done over the past 12 months! All the new watches we presented, and all the moments that make this industry so much fun. Here is a small selection of some of the best ones.

January 2020 – LVMH Watch Week

Starting the year in the sunshine, the photograph of this beautiful Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic Satin-Polished Steel timepiece was taken in mid-January at the LVMH Watch Week in Dubai just before the world went into lockdown and all the watch fairs were canceled. February 2020 – HYT H5

Some watches are harder to photograph than others due to the way some brands use highly-reflective sapphire crystals. Watchonista’s Liam O’Donnell wasn’t at all fazed by the HYT H5 and took a whole series of super cool shots of the timepiece in New York, including this great wrist shot.

March 2020 – Winter Kayaking With Doxa

Despite this year’s challenges, we never stopped testing watches for you, whether from our home offices or while partaking in socially-distanced activities, such as this spectacular adventure of winter kayaking with DOXA on Lake Brienz.

April 2020 – Watches And Pets

Originally meant to be just a bit of fun, we put a call out on Instagram for pictures of your watches and your pets – together! The response was outstanding, with over 250 photos sent in. We had cats, dogs, ducks, donkeys, and even a kangaroo! If you missed it, here is our famous pet photo gallery.

May 2020 – Watch Quiz

Another of our favorite activities this year was the watch quiz. We tested your watch knowledge by providing you with a picture of a watch’s hands and asking you to name the watch. It was harder than it looked. Check out our latest quiz about watch crowns too.

June 2020 – Instagram Live Sessions

Watchonista was the first watch media to embrace Instagram Live with a whole series of interviews with brand CEOs. A special shout-out has to go to our Co-Founder Marco Gabella who was always on stand-by when things didn’t work out as planned!

July 2020 – The Unlikely Watch Collector

This photo of Rowen Atkinson embodies a new series that we debuted this year called The Unlikely Watch Collector. And much to our delight, it has been hugely popular. We have covered some quite unlikely collectors, including the Pope, Albert Einstein, and HRH Queen Elizabeth II, to name a few.

August 2020 – Geneva Watch Days

At long last, we got the opportunity to visit our friends at many of the watch brands at Geneva Watch Days in August. Our Swiss team enjoyed catching up with old friends and getting to try on watches. This is the Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon ‘Dark Matter’ modeled by Marco Gabella and photographed by the talented Pierre Vogel.

September 2020 – Inside Rolex

An invitation to Rolex’s Geneva headquarters was definitely the highlight of September, where we got to try on all their new toys. Here is the new Rolex Submariner 41 ref. 126610LV, it certainly caught our eye.

October 2020 – A Virtual Marathon With Maurice Lacroix

In October, we tested the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Chronograph while running the Virtual London Marathon. A fun challenge that truly put the Aikon to the test by timing the 42km around the Swiss countryside.

November 2020 – Helicopter Tour For Wempe’s Anniversary

Watchonista’s US team took to the skies in November to take photographs of Wempe’s 40th Anniversary timepieces. Helicopter doors off, wrists out in the air, they bravely took some great shots of New York from the sky while trying not to die!

December 2020 – Gift Guides

Finally, in December, we prepared a series of gift guides for the holidays to give you some different ideas for presents. In particular, this luxurious list of culinary gift ideas really tantalized our tasted buds. It was accompanied by a photoshoot of our journalists in the kitchen timing their pasta with the Bulgari Aluminium.
