Geneva Watch Days: Rocking Out With The New Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon ‘Dark Matter’

Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel said it best, “It's like, how much more black could this be, and the answer is none. None more black.”

Geneva-based brand Czapek & Cie isn’t shy about admitting that their Place Vendôme collection is a bit of a “black sheep” within the Czapek family. It is a highly complicated collection nestled between the now-iconic Quai Des Bergues, Faubourg de Cracovie chronographs, and the relative newcomer Antarctique collection (read HERE) that introduces the brand to a more mainstream audience.

The Place Vendôme platform represents a playground in which Czapek’s watchmakers can apply the latest watchmaking innovations and treatments. Launched in 2017, the collection is known for its suspended tourbillon and GMT complication, along with a smartly displayed power reserve indicator.

At Geneva Watch Days, Czapek introduced their new Place Vendôme Tourbillon ‘Dark Matter,’ an all-black titanium timepiece with some serious Spinal Tap vibes.

The Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon Dark Matter

The latest introduction in the collection, the new Place Vendôme Tourbillon Dark Matter edition, features an ADLC coated 43.5mm grade 5 titanium case with a curved sapphire crystal.

Powered by Czapek’s proprietary Calibre SXH2, a manually wound movement created by Chronode and Czapek & Cie., it boasts a power reserve of 60 hours off a single mainspring. There is some serious watchmaking going on here.

A black sand-blasted anthracite mainplate is paired with a steel PVD coated tourbillon and GMT complication bridges. A true stunner in the metal. The same PVD treatments are applied throughout the reverse of the movement, which is viewable through the sapphire crystal caseback.

“Within our Place Vendôme line, we started with the most luscious version and we are now launching the ‘rockest’ one. Collectors were eager to also have sportier models with unusual materials combinations, still made with best-in-class haute horlogerie craftsmanship,” said Xavier de Roquemaurel, CEO of Czapek & Cie., in a press release.

The centerpiece of the Dark Matter is a black enamel dial which features polished indices and a sandblasted center plate. The arrow-style hour and minutes hands are crafted from white gold and filled with Super-Luminova. Finally, the watch comes fitted to an alligator strap with matching black titanium buckle.

Roquemaurel was right when he said that the new Dark Matter timepiece is the brand’s “rockest” one. The piece is befitting a heavy metal guitarist who just so happens to have the sensibilities of a classical violinist. “Rock On!”

Pricing and Availability

The Czapek Place Vendôme Tourbillon Dark Matter is limited to just 10 pieces, which is coincidentally the same number of studio albums recorded by Metallica. The watch is priced at 90,000 CHF.
