Having collaborated for almost half a decade, Hublot and Berluti have a history filled with Italian influence. Hublot, being founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco and Berluti having been established in 1895 by Alessandro Berluti; mixing modern design with an impressive pedigree, it is no wonder the partnership continues to thrive.

Their latest piece, the new Big Bang Unico Berluti Aluminio embodies both brands as the fusion of titanium and leather expertly depicts two shining attributes of both houses. A release of this significance needs a night like no other, enter Mercer Kitchen. The hip Soho restaurant by the Michelin-starred chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Adding modern flair, to classic cuisine, the famed chef also embodies the ethos of the alliance.

First Off, Food

The evening began as all great evenings should, with warm glazed potatoes and caviar. That was to be topped by an heirloom tomato salad topped with harvest fruit that Monsieur Vongerichten said himself, “it was the last week of the season.” Followed then by a main lobster and an American Wagyu beef tenderloin, the evening was an absolute culinary treat.

Prior to dessert and a surprise to attendees, glasses of Hennessey Cognac were served for a celebratory toast, paring rather well with the fig and strawberry Petit-Beurre. Anything but a third wheel to the collaboration between Hublot and Berluti, Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s attention to detail and mastery of craft is that of a Swiss watchmaker or an Italian leather designer.

The Devil’s in the Details

A first for the houses, the Big Bang Unico Berluti Aluminio showcase Venezia leather, patinated by Berluti. Frozen in time and encapsulated between two pieces of sapphire glass, the leather is prominently displayed on the dial. The monochromatic tone of the watch is juxtaposed with the rugged 44mm case made of titanium.

Featuring a two-part bezel design, combining titanium and leather; allowing the bezel to patina over time, like a pair of Berluti loafers. The watch, though sized at 44mm is interestingly subdued in person; there is a versatility to this watch due to the color choices. Playing off the cherished patina of Venezia leather, the watch has luxurious yet versatile ease much like a piece from Berluti.

Last Bites

A with every Hublot and Berluti edition, the watch is limited to one hundred pieces. The beautifully toned shades cannot be stressed enough, as the monochrome humbles the larger case making it shockingly approachable for a watch packing a sizable punch.

Combining Swiss horology, Italian leather, and French cuisine makes for an unforgettable trifecta representative of the five-year partnership. Here’s to the next five and many more Mercer Kitchen meals.
