From September 26th to October 12th, 2014, Jaeger-LeCoultre will celebrate the best of American and International cinema at the 52nd New York Film Festival as part of their partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, including their annual initiative the Filmmaker in Residence Programme.
Since 1963, the New York Film Festival has brought new and important cinematic works from around the world to Lincoln Center. In addition to the Main Slate official selections, the festival includes newly restored classics, special events, filmmaker talks, panel discussions, an Avant-Garde showcase, and much more.
Jaeger-LeCoultre will celebrate filmmakers as well as new talents including 2014 Filmmaker in Residence Lisandro Alonso. The Argentinean filmmaker will present his most recent work, Jauja, starring Viggo Mortensen, participate in panel discussions, attend screenings, visit film schools, and discuss his project with filmmakers.
The Advisory Board members participating in the initiative this year include: Lisa Cortes, James Gray, Tom Kalin, Eric Mendelsohn, Bennett Miller, Mira Nair, Ira Sachs, Todd Solondz, Fisher Stevens, Marisa Tomei and Christine Vachon. Their involvement will include meeting with and mentoring Lisandro Alonso as he develops his next film project, participating in the panels during the New York Film Festival and attending events in support of the initiative.
As part of their patronage, Jaeger-LeCoultre will present “An Evening with Richard Gere”, an initiative that recognizes the work of individuals who have made significant artistic contributions to film culture, and will continue to do so in the future. This year, Richard Gere stars in the Main Slate selection from director Oren Moverman, Time Out of Mind.
From the red carpet to the most intimate events of the festival, Jaeger-LeCoultre will show its longstanding engagement and close affinity to the world of film during this 17-day celebration.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center
Founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international cinema, the Film Society of Lincoln Center works to recognize established and emerging filmmakers, support important new work, and to enhance the awareness, accessibility, and understanding of the moving image.
The Film Society produces the renowned New York Film Festival, a curated selection of the year’s most significant new film work, and presents or collaborates on other annual New York City festivals including Dance on Camera, Film Comment Selects, Human Rights Watch Film Festival, LatinBeat, New Directors/New Films, NewFest, New York African Film Festival, New York Asian Film Festival, New York Jewish Film Festival, Open Roads: New Italian Cinema and Rendez-Vous with French Cinema.
In addition to publishing the award-winning Film Comment magazine, The Film Society recognizes an artist's unique achievement in film with the prestigious Chaplin Award. The Film Society’s state-of-the-art Walter Reade Theater and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, located at Lincoln Center, provide a home for year-round programs and the New York City film community.
Jaeger-LeCoultre and the world of Cinema
Jaeger-LeCoultre has been closely associated with the best artistic film festivals around the world starting with the Venice International Film Festival. The Brand has also paid tribute to filmmakers’ creative ingenuity by conferring the Glory to the Filmmaker Award to a personality “who has brought great innovation to contemporary cinema”. The list of past honourees makes fascinating reading: Takeshi Kitano (2007) Abbas Kiarostami (2008), Agnès Varda (2008), Sylvester Stallone (2009), Mani Ratnam (2010), Al Pacino (2011), Spike Lee (2012), Ettore Scola (2013) and James Franco (2014).
Jaeger-LeCoultre also partners the Shanghai International Film Festival. Within this context, Jaeger-LeCoultre organises a gala evening and a charity auction aimed at funding film production in China as well as restoring several classic Chinese movies. During the 2014 Shanghai International Film Festival, a screening of ‘Chinese Film Masterpieces Restored by Jaeger-LeCoultre’ is to showcase the results of this project.
For the past three years, Jaeger-LeCoultre has proudly sponsored the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, created in 2007 with the commitment to curating exceptional programs that engage and educate the community, inspire filmmakers and nurture the growth of the Middle Eastern film industry. In 2012, Jaeger-LeCoultre also decided to partner the International Film Festival in San Sebastian, Spain.
In June 2014, Jaeger-LeCoultre honored filmmaking at the Los Angeles Film Festival, as a first time sponsor of the festival and hosted the “Women Who Call the Shots: A Celebration of Women Directors and Showrunners” event, a tribute to women directors and showrunners who are changing the stories on the screen and the statistics in Hollywood with their contributions. Filmmaker and Festival Guest Director Lisa Cholodenko received the Jaeger-LeCoultre “Glory to the filmmaker” Award - a prize dedicated to a personality who has brought innovation to contemporary cinema.
In September 2014, Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrated the best of International and Canadian cinema at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival, as a first time sponsor of the festival. In addition the Brand supported the TIFF Rising Stars, an initiative that immerses four up-and-coming Canada’s actors in a series of public events and private industry meetings in order to be mentored in the different facets of the industry. This year Sophie Desmarais, Julia Sarah Stone, Shannon Kook, and Alexandre Landry were the four emerging talents who received intensive professional development with international casting directors, filmmakers, producers and development executives during the Festival. Jaeger-LeCoultre was proud to celebrate, in partnership with the film's distributor, Entertainment One, the North American Premiere of MAPS TO THE STARS, the latest film by Canadian Master Filmmaker David Cronenberg on September 9th, 2014. Prior to the screening, Jaeger-LeCoultre hosted a cocktail reception and welcomed Director David Cronenberg, Screenwriter Bruce Wagner, Producers Martin Katz and Michel Merkt, and brilliant cast starring Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams, Evan Bird and friend of the Brand Sarah Gadon.
