Rolex Daytona Anniversary - Claude Sfeir Interview

Claude Sfeir of Lebanon, is an important collector, but also a gemologist and jeweler. Difficult to miss Mr. Sfeir during auctions... Watchonista had to interview such a "serial" watch collector on his relationship with the iconic Rolex Daytona.

W: What does the Rolex Daytona Cosmograph represent for you?

CS: The Rolex Daytona chronographs are the most collectible timepieces from Rolex.

Do you have or have you ever wanted to own a Rolex Daytona? If yes, could you please tell us the ref / year ?

I always wanted to own a Rolex Daytona, I bought my first one in 1980 in Dubai, it's a reference 6263/1976.

A stainless steel with the UAE desert eagle "coat of arms" and the signatures of Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, who was the Minister of Defense of UAE in the 80's, and now the Ruler of Dubai.

Since 1980, I have purchased other Daytonas which include references 6239, 6240, 6241, 6262 and 6265.

The last Daytona I acquired was also a stainless steel: ref. 16520 serial A made in 2000. It's a special order with a dial made of sodalite and set with 8 diamonds. The original documents confirm the genuineness of the dial.

According to you, why has this watch become so mythical?

Since first references, Rolex found a design at the crossroads of vintage and modernity, which make them timeless.

50 years after its launch, how do you imagine the future evolution of this emblematic model?

The future of the Daytonas has already be written: a collectible timepiece by Rolex, always in demand by collectors.

If you have something special to add… please feel free!

Thanks again to choose me between many important collectors worldwide and hope that you like my answers and pictures...
