A Shared Attention to (Auto) Details, Part 4
Watch enthusiasts revel in the intricacies, and so does Watchonista. The devil is in the details, and that’s precisely why Watchonista wants to highlight some of the brilliant design elements usually overlooked by mainstream automotive publications (as we have done in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 of this series).
These hidden gems, obsessed over by automotive designers and engineers globally, deserve recognition.
We hope you enjoy the latest crop of our favorite design and engineering details – elements that we think capture and celebrate the artistry of automotive innovation.
Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class G-TURN
Already iconic, the new all-electric G580 from Mercedes-Benz will have you literally doing circles with its new G-TURN feature. Utilizing four independently controlled electric motors, this G-Class SUV will rotate on its own axis when wheels on one side turn in the opposite direction to those on the other, enabling precise, stationary rotations.
Activation requires the vehicle to be stationary with specific settings engaged, including the LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction and “Rock” drive program. However, once engaged, the G-TURN can perform up to two complete revolutions, which is ideal for maneuvering around obstacles. Plus, it automatically deactivates for seamless off-road navigation.
Volvo EX90 Thor’s Hammer Headlights
Swedish carmaker Volvo took its Thor’s Hammer headlight design to a new level when it debuted the headlights on the new all-electric seven-passenger EX90.
Inspired by the mythical hammer, the design features six LED elements for the head and ten for the handle, creating a bold, unmistakable lighting signature.
At night, the hammer splits open, which mimics a lightning strike, revealing powerful full-beam lights with 1.3 million pixels for precision illumination. Adding a playful touch, the headlights “wink” as you approach, blending cutting-edge technology with dynamic design.
Lincoln Nautilus Panoramic Display
The redesigned Nautilus SUV from Lincoln seats five and features the largest screen in its class.
Stretching the entire length of the dashboard, the Nautilus’ 48-inch panoramic screen comes standard in all the Nautilus models, can be used to display detailed navigation instructions and vehicle information, and can even be used to watch movies when parked.
Land Rover Defender 130 Exterior Side-Mounted Gear Carrier
Perhaps the ultimate SUV, the Defender 130 from Land Rover, provides seating for up to eight and offers clever and useful accessories that make the largest Defender model even more capable.
For example, the exterior side-mounted gear carrier is perfect for extra storage, like wetsuits or other dirty gear you don’t want to bring inside the vehicle. Plus, with a capacity of 6.3 gallons, this waterproof and lockable gear carrier is easily within reach when you need it most.
Mazda CX-70 Cargo Power Supply
An impressive new plug-in hybrid electric from Mazda, the CX-70 can travel up to 26 miles on its battery, but it also has some other tricks.
Behind its second row of seats is a spacious cargo area. Among several amenities, this area also includes a 1500-watt power outlet that can provide enough juice to run appliances like a refrigerated cooler, making the CX-70 perfect for tailgating at your next big game.
