Holy G: The 2025 Mercedes-AMG G 63 is a Cutting-edge Classic
Since its debut in 1979, the Mercedes G-Class has stood as a symbol of off-road excellence within the Mercedes lineup.
At first glance, its iconic, boxy silhouette seems timeless, unchanged over 45 years. Yet beneath its rugged exterior lies a wealth of cutting-edge technology, seamlessly integrating the latest advancements in safety, powertrain, and suspension systems.
With a starting price of $186,100, the 2025 Mercedes-AMG G 63 cements its position at the pinnacle of luxury SUVs, ready to dominate the road – and the trail – for years to come.
Engine
Under the hood, the new AMG G 63 boasts the Handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine, delivering an impressive 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
This meticulously built engine is signed by its maker and features a 48-volt onboard electrical system paired with an integrated starter generator (ISG), adding an extra 20 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque at lower engine speeds.
The result is jaw-dropping performance: the AMG G 63 rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 137 mph.
Suspension
The new G 63 sets a new standard for on-road performance thanks to its available AMG Active Ride Control suspension system, which replaces traditional mechanical anti-roll bars with advanced hydraulic elements.
Essentially, this innovative setup uses adaptive shock absorbers linked by hydraulic lines to minimize body roll, maintain camber, and adapt to obstacles for a smoother ride. Meanwhile, enhanced wheel articulation ensures consistent surface contact, improved traction, superior climbing ability, and exceptional off-road comfort.
Drive an older G 63 and then experience the new model with this suspension – you’ll be instantly convinced. The difference is truly transformative.
IWC Watch Screen
While there is no mechanical timepiece in the new G, Mercedes designers did integrate a pretty cool IWC watch screen in the center screen.
The watch includes a stopwatch and carries on the Mercedes and IWC partnership, which started in 2004.
Tactile Buttons
In a nod to the tactile precision valued by watch enthusiasts, Mercedes retained the G-Class’ signature bank of three buttons to activate the locking center differentials.
This deliberate choice preserves the sense of direct mechanical engagement that has resonated with G Wagon customers for so long. Thank you, Mercedes, for not putting these buttons into a digital menu.
Flat Bottom Wheel
A standard AMG Performance steering wheel feels perfect in your hand and features a flat bottom rim trimmed in carbon fiber that contrasts perfectly with the aluminum AMG engraved center spokes.
Plus, round AMG Drive Unit buttons put the control of various vehicle settings and performance modes within easy reach.
Exterior
The front end showcases a striking AMG-specific bumper featuring three vertical louvers over the air inlets and sleek stainless-steel inserts.
It also comes standard with adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights that are equipped with 84 individually controllable high-performance LEDs, so they can be adjusted to various driving conditions for optimal illumination.
The taillights also incorporate advanced LED technology, completing the modern and dynamic lighting design.
Fuel Filler Cap
Mercedes has even equipped the G 63 with a distinctive aluminum fuel-filler cap engraved with the AMG logo.
It’s a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the meticulous care and craftsmanship Mercedes designers pour into every aspect of the vehicle.
