Keeping Slim for the Holidays: Hermès Introduces Two New Slim d’Hermès Models
La Montre Hermès continues on its path of offering horologically interesting timepieces that are as visually appealing as they are beautifully designed.
The year was 2015, and after years of working in (and writing about) the jewelry industry in some way, shape, or form, I took the leap of faith and decided to try my hand at watch journalism. The problem was, I had never really bought a watch for myself before (at least not one I was proud to own or felt comfortable showing off). I had received a watch as a gift from my then-husband, but picking one out for myself seemed like a foreign concept.
So, after much research, a lot of chatting with friends, and a check of the funds in my bank account, I finally made my decision and called a friend at a Memphis AD to purchase an Hermès timepiece.
I opted for the Heure H with a red strap for myself as it was a watch I recognized immediately and found visually appealing. I wear it often to this day and it holds a special place in my collection because it signified a shift in career for me, which began just about ten years ago.
Coincidentally, 2015 was also the year Hermès introduced the world to the Slim d’Hermès collection at the then-Baselworld fair; the brand’s first new and complete collection of watches since the popular Cape Cod collection was introduced in 1991.
The original Slim d’Hermès watches – manufactured in 25mm and 32mm with quartz movements for women, and two separate 39.5mm versions, including a perpetual calendar geared toward men – received glowing reviews from the international press, as well as collectors and enthusiasts alike.
It was clear that Hermès desired to take its watch game to a different level with this collection, and a decade later, the brand continues to make good on that promise by releasing the new Slim d’Hermès Squelette Lune and Slim d’Hermès GMT.
Man at the Helm
La Montre Hermès – established in Biel in 1978 – has, for roughly seventeen years, been under the creative leadership of Philippe Delhotal.
With an extensive and impressive resume within the watch industry, it is no surprise that he and his creative team continue to push the envelope with regard to design while also managing to make almost instantaneous classics. The Arceau collection is a perfect example of this.
Designed in 1978 by Henri d’Origny, the Arceau collection continues to be popular not only because it’s an excellently designed, mechanically sophisticated timepiece, but also because the creative team at Hermès keeps finding new, sometimes very unexpected ways for the Arceau to stay fresh while appealing to a variety of generations.
The same generational appeal can also be ascribed to the Slim d’Hermès collection; however, its success stems from a subtler form of creativity that hews more closely to traditional beauty (both in an artistic sense and aesthetic) than the Arceau.
More to Love
In the decade since the Slim d’Hermès made its debut, La Montre Hermès has added a number of editions, complications, and colors to its roster. Last year, the watch world was treated to a visual feast with the Slim d’Hermès Le sacre des saison versions, which represented an interpretation of the four seasons.
There are countless directions in which the house can take the collection, and we’re here, with popcorn, waiting always to see what’s next. As of now, however, we needn’t wait any longer.
The Slim d’Hermès Squelette Lune was originally released by the brand in 2021 and featured a titanium case, platinum bezel, white gold crown, and openworked dial with a double moonphase display. The brand has released its latest version of the Slim d’Hermès Squelette Lune, only this time with a 39.5mm case crafted in 18K 5N rose gold.
A skeleton dial and double moonphase complication are still front and center on the most recent version, and of course, the watch is equipped with the ultra-thin Hermès manufacture movement, H1953, which offers a roughly 48-hour power reserve.
As with the previous editions, the crystal and exhibition caseback are crafted using anti-glare sapphire material, and the timepiece is water-resistant to 3 bar (30 meters). The rose gold Slim d’Hermès Squelette Lune offers the option of a grey or black alligator strap or a black calfskin strap, all with a matching 18K rose gold buckle.
The second Slim d’Hermès released recently is the Slim d’Hermès GMT, featuring a microblasted titanium case and an 18K 5N rose gold bezel.
As with more recent editions of the Slim d’Hermès GMT, this piece’s case size remains 39.5mm, with the crown and pusher crafted from 18K rose gold. The warm brown galvanic dial, featuring a sunburst chapter ring, sandblasted center, and date function at 6 o’clock, is a lovely contrast to the watch’s white GMT sub-dial.
The Slim d’Hermès GMT is equipped with the Ultra-thin Hermès Manufacture movement H1950, offering approximately 48 hours of power reserve, is water-resistant to 3 bar, and is available with a choice of two alligator leather straps or a natural Barenia calfskin strap, all with a titanium buckle.
