The GMT has always been touted as the ultimate tool watch for the traveler because it lets you keep track of time in two time zones. But now that unnecessary travel is being discouraged, this helpful feature makes the GMT an extremely useful timepiece for coordinating Zoom calls and FaceTiming with family members in distant places.
The new TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT is a tool watch that is not only up for the rigors of travel, but its elegant styling also makes it a great everyday watch for both today and the future when we all step away from the screens and back into the sunlight. Here are the details.
AQUA FAN
We could all use a little extra beauty these days. So, first off, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT is a handsome watch. Cased in stainless steel, the timepiece features a GMT function with a stunning blue striped dial. It’s a contemporary reinterpretation of the now-classic water-resistant collection.
A bit of history, the Aquaracer was first launched in 2004. Originally called the 2000 Aquaracer, the firstborn in this family was a quartz-powered 38mm or automatic 41mm steel model rated to 300m water resistance.
Over the years, the brand has upgraded the Aquaracer’s functionality to make it more “life-proof,” but this year’s model amps up its game in the looks department as well.
The play of light across the colorful dial is nice, but the Aquaracer GMT also offers up many other design delights. The black and blue, unidirectional Batman bezel is the first thing to grab your attention. Then, there’s the white Super-LumiNova coated hands, markers, and applied indexes. This watch is still built for function. It is designed to meet the demands of professional diving, where legibility is vital, but the style is quite nice as well. This is a watch you will want to play with in the dark!
At 43mm, it’s still a very sporty look for an everyday watch, but all of the elements are nicely balanced, making it work in many different environments. Plus, tool watches are becoming ever more acceptable in more formal environments anyway. The date aperture is discreet, the screw-down crown is not too oversized, and other elements such as the double security clasp and sapphire crystal project a sense of permanence.
OUTBOARD MOTOR
Speaking of function and reliability, the Aquaracer GMT’s ultra-practical, second time zone feature can be adjusted using the crown, and it is read by following the lacquered blue hand and the black and blue bezel, which has a 24-hour GMT scale. To ensure maximum readability, the GMT hand has been ingeniously mounted in a secondary position — between the hour and minute hands — so that it passes over the indexes, skimming the GMT scale.
This next-generation Aquaracer is also a significant evolution from the original quartz-powered models. The Aquaracer GMT is driven by the in-house Calibre 7 with a 46-hour power reserve. It’s also equipped with the six diving features standard to the Aquaracer family: water resistance to 300 meters (30 bar), the aforementioned unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown, glowing hands and markers, a super-comfortable bracelet with a double security clasp, and a robust sapphire crystal.
And priced at just $3,050, its versatility makes it a real bargain.
