TAG Heuer Unveils A Brickyard Themed Timepiece For The 104th Edition Of The Indy 500

This year’s Indy 500 will be run without fans in attendance, but that doesn’t mean IndyCar and TAG Heuer fans won’t have anything to cheer for.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in Speedway, Indiana, has been in nearly continuous operation since it opened in 1909. The famed track has hosted 103 editions of the Indianapolis 500, 26 runnings of the NASCAR Brickyard 400, and eight Formula One United States Grand Prix. The only times the track has not been in operation was for World War I and World War II, when the track was either closed or repurposed as an airfield.

This year's 104th edition of the Indianapolis 500 has been shrouded in plenty of intrigue. Originally scheduled for May 24, 2020, the race was rescheduled to August 23 due to COVID-19. While track officials and new owner Roger Penske expected to host at least a small percentage of the 350,000 fans the track typically sees on race day, the decision was made to run this year's race without fans. Meaning millions of race fans will be watching the 500 from the comfort of their homes.

Introducing The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Indy 500 2020 Special Edition

In 2020, TAG Heuer celebrates 16 years as the Official Timekeeper of the Indianapolis 500 and the NTT IndyCar Series. Throughout their partnership, TAG Heuer has released a variety of limited-edition Indy 500 pieces, which Watchonista has covered HERE, HERE, and HERE. These special edition pieces have traditionally been accessibly-priced and widely available at the brand's US retailers. The same could be said for IndyCar itself, this down to earth open-wheel series is fan-friendly and tickets for races like the Indy 500 start at just $20.

For 2020, TAG Heuer has produced what very well may be the most fitting tribute to the Indy 500 and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The new Formula 1 Indy 500 2020 Special Edition is a 43mm timepiece with an all-black motif minus a small red brick pattern on the dial. This decidedly racy timepiece features a black DLC steel case, sandblasted to provide a matte finish.

The black textured dial features three silver “azurage” chronograph subdials (hour, minute, second) and date at 4 o'clock. The rhodium-plated indices and the central hour/minute hands are coated with white Super-LumiNova. The solid steel caseback also features the Indy 500 logo.

Like other Indy 500 special editions, this watch is part of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 collection. It features the distinctive Indianapolis Motor Speedway logo placed at the 6 o'clock subdial, which indicates the hour chronograph counter. The quartz-powered chronograph also features a black, sandblasted ceramic fixed tachymeter bezel, which is emblemized with the words 'INDY 500.’ Fitted to a black rubber strap, the Formula 1 Indy 500 2020 Special Edition is the perfect race day accessory.

Pricing And Availability

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Indy 500 2020 Special Edition is limited to 1,500 pieces and priced at $2,050. The watch is available now at TAGHeuer.com and your nearest TAG Heuer retailer. You can watch the Indy 500 on Sunday, August 23, at 1:00 p.m. EDT on NBC. Be on the lookout for friend of the brand Alexander Rossi as he seeks to win his second Indy 500. On his wrist? We're told it'll be the Formula 1 Indy 500 2020 Special Edition.
