Citizen Releases Two Very Different Models to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Its Ground-Breaking Eco-Drive

One is an artful green execution that honors the watchmaker’s artistic heritage. The other is a more technical, futuristic model that might hint at its next chapter. However, both are eye-catching ways to celebrate the 50th birthday of Citizen’s groundbreaking Eco-Drive Technology.

A recent gala event at New York’s Guggenheim Museum not only reminded us of the unmatched visual impact of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structure; it also served as an appropriately potent location to fete the 50th anniversary of Citizen’s profound Eco-Drive technology.

In 1976, the watchmaker tapped into (then improved upon) the budding power source of solar panels by creating the world’s first light-powered analog timepiece: the Crystron Solar Cell.

By “light-powered,” we mean any light source can serve as a charging platform for the timepiece, not just sun rays. Hence, the important and ongoing innovation of the technology itself. Still, when the technology was introduced a half-century ago, approximately 80% of the light from any source had to pass through the watch dial to power the movement.

Now, however, modern Eco-Drive-equipped timepieces require only 15% of available light to pass through to fill the power tank. This has led to greater design flexibility and the introduction of Eco-Drive technology into nearly every type of wristwatch Citizen makes, from dive watches to elegant evening watches.

“For 50 years, Eco-Drive has led the world in light-powered watchmaking technology,” said Jeffrey Cohen, President of Citizen Watch America, at the event. “We are the first, the market leader, and the ‘market maker’ of this entire category of watches. Others have tried and failed, but not us. We continue to evolve Eco-Drive to unlock new possibilities in design, performance, and sustainability for all Citizens of the World.”

One thing is certain: Citizen now has at least two very appealing new Eco-Drive models that have just been released around the 50th-anniversary celebration. Let’s shed some light on them.

Citizen 50 Years of Eco-Drive Innovation Anniversary Edition

The new 40mm, titanium-encased 50 Years of Eco-Drive Innovation Anniversary Edition (Ref. AQ4091-56W) is an elegantly classic wristwatch that delivers a timeless design, paying full honor to the technology’s esteemed heritage. However, both cutting-edge innovation and age-old Japanese artisan flair combine to create a perfect storm of commemorative, limited-edition appeal.

On the cutting-edge side, Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium material is used to make it lightweight and provide it with rugged hardness. Plus, a special light-catching Duratect Platinum treatment on the case and bracelet that provides a more silver-y, gleaming hue than conventional titanium finishes.

Additionally, a current Cal. A080 Eco-Drive movement ensures an accuracy of +/- 5 seconds per year and an 18-month life on a full light charge. Moreover, due to the nature of the technology, the minimalist date window at 3 o’clock serves as a “perpetual date” calendar, automatically adjusting at the end of each month and for leap years as well (until Feb. 28th in the year 2100).

Of course, a green dial on a “green” watch is to be expected. However, for this limited-edition celebratory model, that green speaks to the more artisanal element of the story, as this piece’s dial is made of washi paper. Traditionally used in Japanese screens and lanterns, this paper, as it turns out, is also an ideal dial material to efficiently transmit light to the watch movement.

Moreover, a traditional chitose midori pigment technique is used to color the dial. First, artisans dye the paper yellow with ibuki kariyasu grass, then carefully add layers of indigo dye to create the final, brilliantly verdant effect seen on this dial.

Another Japanese word to add to your lexicon: tokubetsu, which means special.

Eco-Drive Photon Limited Editions

Two, perhaps more forward-looking, limited-edition models – called the Eco-Drive Photon – were also released alongside the Anniversary Edition above.

Available in two flavors and sporting a more modernist 39.6mm cushion-like case and slinkier, overlapping bracelet design, this duo is also rendered in Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium and sports the new Cal. E036 movement that provides a full year of run-life on a single charge.

A multi-layered dial design not only provides for efficient light transmission through its metal plates with ripple-like slits to the movement, but its construction also allows for an ever-changing chromatic show on the dial as light reflects off the structural color film surface of the charging components.

Pick either a more classic silver-colored case and bracelet colorway (Ref. BJ6560-53W) or a more contrasting black-and-gold tone execution (Ref. BJ6569-59X). Either way, these Photons provide a futuristic light show to enjoy on your wrist.
