The Unlikely Watch Collector: Tom Cruise
The A-list actor has quietly amassed an impressive watch collection. So many that we couldn’t possibly list them all. Here’s an overview.
Tom Cruise is an enigmatic superstar. Sure, we know about his blockbuster films and his high-profile romances with Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes, and Penelope Cruz. But the landscape between these two poles remains kind of mysterious. Maybe that’s why this top gun’s watch collection has flown under the radar – at least by celebrity standards.
Cruise has never been a brand ambassador. And while watchmakers are quick to point out that he wore a Casio DW290-1V in the first Mission: Impossible (1996) or a Porsche Design Chronograph 1 by Orfina in Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022), we have never received a press release describing which timepiece he wore on the red carpet.
After decades at the top of the cinematic equivalent of Mount Olympus, Cruise can afford to buy his own horological flowers. And even though he keeps his personal collection low-key, at least from an enthusiast perspective, that just makes it feel more authentic.
Holy Rollies
Just two years after Top Gun, Cruise took on a very different role in the critically acclaimed Rain Man (1988), in which Cruise portrays a selfish salesman who is attempting to wrest away his brother’s share of their father’s fortune. And in the Eighties, nothing signaled striving yuppie like a gold Rolex Day-Date.
Offscreen, Cruise has been spotted wearing many Rolexes in the wild.
One of Cruise’s favorite everyday watches is a 36mm stainless steel Rolex Datejust Ref. 16200. In production from 1989 to 2006, it is much more grounded than the Day-Date. This watch features a smooth bezel, Roman numerals, a white dial, and a classic Oyster bracelet. This Datejust is a great every-man watch.
Here he is wearing his Datejust at the press conference for the thriller Valkyrie in 2009.
His obvious affinity for his Datejust aside, Cruise’s watch box is home to all kinds of Rollies. In 2022, he was photographed leaving the five-star London hotel The Dorchester wearing a 42mm Sky-Dweller Ref. 326934 with an Oyster bracelet, jubilee bezel, and black sunburst dial.
While making the press rounds for Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live wearing a classic Rolex GMT-Master II Ref. 126719BLRO in steel version with a blue dial.
As a collector, Cruise seems to be a Rolex completist, so, of course, he’s going to have a Daytona. But because he is an icon himself, he can’t wear just any old Daytona. In fact, he seems to have too many Daytonas to list here.
That said, while promoting Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in 2025, he was seen with a Rolex Platinum Daytona ref. 116506 with an ice blue dial, full platinum case and bracelet, and a killer chestnut brown ceramic bezel.
The star’s most recent acquisition seems to be an ultra-rare white gold Rolex Day-Date 40 with a meteorite dial. He might have more surprises, but true to Cruise form, he’s been keeping out of the public eye since walking the red carpet at Cannes in 2025.
The Outsiders
While Cruise has starred in many franchises (Mission: Impossible, Jack Reacher, and Top Gun), he has also made notable turns working on one-offs with auteurs like Oliver Stone (Born on the Fourth of July), Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut), and Steven Spielberg (Minority Report). And while his watch collection leans heavily toward Rolex, there are many unexpected editions in his safe.
We don’t know what watch Cruise was wearing during his infamous “Jumping on the Couch” moment on Oprah Winfrey’s show, but he had a 44mm Panerai Luminor Marina Ref. PAM00299 on his wrist when he attended the equally iconic talk show host’s final show in 2011.
What makes this model extra special is that it came set on a handsome integrated bracelet. (Tom Cruise also wore Panerai for his uncredited cameo in the 2008 movie Tropic Thunder.)
It should come as no surprise that the Top Gun star is a collector of pilot’s watches. What’s interesting is his love for very niche pilot’s watches. In fact, he’s a student of aviation history and is said to collect planes as well as watches.
In 2009, Tom Cruise was spotted at a Las Vegas airshow wearing a Graham Chronofighter Diver. This British watch is big (measuring 47mm in diameter) and features a patented “trigger” that not only serves as a crown guard but also as a start-stop button for the chronograph.
It should also come as no surprise that he is friends with fellow high-flyers Nick and Giles English – the founders of British brand Bremont. In 2010, Cruise was spotted wearing the Bremont ALT1-C with an anthracite dial at Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s hand-and-footprint ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
When he’s in movie star mode, Cruise can be seen making the rounds on the publicity circuit wearing several different Cartier models, including a medium-sized Cartier Santos and a Calibre de Cartier Chronograph (as seen here in a 2022 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden).
From a collector’s perspective, the Calibre de Cartier is notable because it was discontinued in 2018. So, either Cruise bought it new or spent some time and energy sourcing this rare model.
The Santos, meanwhile, is named after the first celebrity flyboy, Alberto Santos Dumont, so it’s easy to see why Cruise is attracted to this model, which the actor wore while promoting Top Gun: Maverick. We can only imagine how big Cruise’s watch roll was while doing press for that movie.
And finally, Cruise has proven his bona fides as a serious watch collector with his 18k white gold Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin featuring sub-dials for the day, date, month, and moon phase, all of which are guaranteed accurate until the year 2100.
Confidence has always been the actor’s calling card. And at the Palme d’Or ceremony in Cannes in 2022, he showed he wasn’t afraid to wear a watch that undeniably falls within the sports watch genre with formal wear. In fact, he took his signature style up a notch by matching the watch’s blue dial with a blue tux.
