Breitling Joins Concours d’Élégance Suisse for its Third Edition
Car and watch enthusiasts are cut from the same cloth, we love craftsmanship, tradition, and most importantly, great design. For the third edition of Concours d’Élégance Suisse, these worlds will collide.
Announced last week, Concours d’Elégance (CES) is partnering with Breitling for the third edition of their ever popular event. Since car and watch enthusiasts run in similar circles, this partnership feels very natural. In the midst of a turnaround led by George Kern, Breitling has a rich history and their vintage pieces are desired by collectors new and old. Recently, the brand introduced the Navitimer 8 series, which melds a neo-vintage look, sure to be a topic of the brand in the coming years.
“We are proud to be the official partner of the Concours d’Elegance Suisse, which celebrates – with unrivalled passion – the legacy of the golden age of automobiles. It’s an ideal partnership: like Breitling’s timepieces, every car displayed at the Concours tells a truly unique story.” - Georges Kern, CEO Breitling
The theme for the Third Edition of CES, is “From Modernity to Design.” Scheduled to take place at Château de Coppet (Switzerland) June 22nd to 24th 2018. Breitling joins Julius Baer Private Bank and Rolls-Royce Geneva as corporate sponsors. Watchonista has been a proud media sponsor of the event for the past three editions.
Concours d’Elégance Suisse Mandate
Built upon the same strong foundation of tough screening, and quality selection processes, the organizers have crafted strict screening guidelines that closely follow the rules of other major international competitions. Concours d’Elégance is open to vintage cars from Switzerland and Europe along with a selection of autos from across the pond. The partner selection process is held to the same rigid standards, only the best!
“We have decided to subject the cars in the Competition to the stringent rules established by the ICJAG, as we adhere to its objectives supporting the preservation of the heritage and original expertise found in the motoring world. To celebrate this exceptional heritage appropriately, it is essential that we present cars that reflect the spirit and imagination of their creators, while avoiding those which have been distorted by the influence of their owners at some time or another. Our Jury therefore calls on the skills of passionate individuals who share this vision of preservation and who, thanks to their knowledge and experience, are able to assess the originality or authenticity of a car with integrity.” - Mathias Doutreleau, Founder Concours d’Elégance Suisse
Geneva International Motor Show Exhibition
Notably for 2018, the Concours d’Elégance Suisse will show at the Geneva International Motor Show. Which, outside of SIHH, is one of the top events to hit Geneva. Occurring March 8th to 18th 2018, the CES will present a 1935 Avions-Voisin C25 Aérodyne, Best of Show winner at the 2017 Concours d’Elégance Suisse. Attendees will be able to visit the CES stall and experience a small taste of what’s to come for the 2018 Concours d’Elégance!
Watchonista’s interview with Founder Mathias Doutreleau
We had the opportunity to sit down with Concours d’Elégance Suisse founder, Mathias Doutreleau to discuss the 2018 edition and the important role partnerships play in bringing the event to life.
Josh Shanks (JS): Congratulations on the partnership with Breitling! How did this partnership come about?
Mathias Doutreleau (MD): The Concours d’Elegance Suisse is a celebration of automotive heritage and the art of mechanical engineering. In light of this, we wanted to bring along a legendary Swiss watch manufacture to honor the Swiss expertise in precision and technical achievements and innovations. When we read about Breitling's new objectives under their new management, we were convinced there was a common vision and we approached Georges Kern directly. We are delighted and honored to have such a cool –yet historic – watch manufacture as Breitling join as exclusive watch partner of the Concours d’Elegance Suisse.
(JS): We are very much looking forward to the third edition of the Concours. What do you have in store for the event?
(MD): Aside from the traditional Concours classes, this year’s annual theme will pay a special tribute to the 1920 – 1939 era, from Modernity to Design. Several classes will exhibit exceptional automobiles illustrating the rich engineering development and design trends of that period. The Concours will also celebrate the 60th anniversary of two iconic automobiles: the Aston Martin DB4 and the Ferrari 250 GT Coupé Pininfarina. Finally, the Concours’ Future Classics class, from 1970 – 1985, will feature Sport Luxury Sedans such as the Aston Martin Lagonda, Monica, Monteverdi 375/4 or Tiara, Iso Fidia, and more! Program wise, the Concours’ kick-off party will be held on Friday evening on the lawn of the Chateau de Coppet and the public will now have access to the lawn on Saturday from 12pm and Sunday all day.
(JS): The car and watch worlds follow similar orbits, as such, how do you envision the show developing under the partnership with Breitling?
(MD): We envision the Concours to grow, reach out to car collectors and enthusiasts of a younger generation and reinforce its international presence along the world’s top 5 Concours, as we share a common vision with Breitling to embrace the future whilst celebrating our heritage. In one word, we think Breitling’s hashtag #legendaryfuture sums it up pretty well.
