The New Gerald Charles Masterlink Perpetual Calendar: Two Bold Flavors of In-House QPs

While both are inventive and unexpectedly sporty, these two new perpetual calendar-equipped timepieces from Gerald Charles, with expert dial finishing and materials, deliver a one-two punch of profound haute horlogerie options for date-obsessed watch fans.

The watchmakers at Gerald Charles have released one of its Watches and Wonders novelties a little early, but it also happens to be the maison’s most complicated timepiece since it was reestablished less than a decade ago under the spirit of founder and watch design legend Gérald Charles Genta: the Masterlink Perpetual Calendar.

Equipped with arguably one of the most classic and poetic watch complications, this duo of perpetual calendar timepieces receives some out-of-the-box, Génta-worthy design flourishes that anchor the traditional to the distinctly modern.

Modern Love

The 40mm octagonal case and link bracelet are crafted in cutting-edge lightweight Grade 5 titanium. Moreover, the brand’s proprietary “Darkblast” treatment (an evolution of sand-blasting) on the metal adds a big dose of contrasting visual and textural detail running across the case and down the mid-links of the tapered bracelet. This treatment not only makes the material appear darker, but it also gives it a velvety, almost rubber-like texture, making it more tactile.

However, the un-blasted titanium components also receive some expert brushing and polishing to bring out the gleam of the typically matte titanium, making for a winning combination of unexpected finishes. A knurled, pyramid-pointed, mirror-finished crown punctuates the sophisticated-yet-sporty look: Génta inspiration on full display.

The Art of Movement

Not to be outdone by its own case and bracelet, the timepiece’s in-house, 3N gold micro-rotor-equipped GCA11000 automatic movement is equally easy to crow about.

Of the movement and wristwatch, Gerald Charles’ Chief Executive Federico Ziviani said: “It is a source of great pride that this piece is the first asymmetrical perpetual calendar with a micro-rotor and a bespoke three-counter display. We’re particularly proud because the Masterlink Perpetual Calendar also conforms to the mission behind all our watches: to be ultra-thin (10mm, check), water-proof (100-meter water resistance, check), and versatile (read on).

The dial design also supports the Masterlink Perpetual Calendar’s sporty aesthetic, delivering the day (at 9 o’clock), date (at 6 o’clock), month (at 3 o’clock), phases of the moon (integrated into the counter at 6), and leap year indication in a familiar, almost chronograph-like sub-dial array that will not need to be adjusted for 100 years. The large date and moonphase counter at 6 o’clock breaks the straight lines of the inner dial with a charming, curved overlap known as the Gerald Charles “smile.”

As the self-named “master of shaped engineering,” Gerald Charles artisans created the movement as a octagon to match the case shape; yet another signature nod to the late founder and innovator.

Golden Views or Dark, Elegant Nights?

The new movement will doubtless serve as a new platform for the brand, but it should not be overlooked that these inaugural models also offer a choice between an openworked dial with prominent diagonal Geneva stripes on the visible plates and a smoky anthracite fumé dial with a striking vertical cut-out grill design.

The openworked execution carries some tinted zones behind the calendar indications and minute track to enhance legibility, but the stunning view of the exquisitely decorated baseplate, bridges, cams, and levers is largely uninterrupted and captivating.

The two-level fumé dial execution hides the equally decorated movement from the top, but the payoff of its smoked ruthenium dial real estate that graduates to darker tones near the dial edge more than makes up for the reduced transparency. You can still drink in the movement’s glory via a notoriously difficult-to-engineer asymmetrical exhibition caseback.

Counter adjustments are handled by four recessed pushers, two on each side of the case, with generous dimpling that makes any corrections a snap with a provided, soft-tipped tool.

Final Thoughts

According to the watch’s designer, Octavio Garcia, “The Masterlink Perpetual Calendar…marks a turning point in the Masterlink collection, where form, function, and movement converge into a single architectural system. From the sculpted case to the structured dial and shaped caliber beneath, every element speaks the same visual grammar.”
