Concord C2-GrafittiGrey Review by Professionalwatches

The Concord C2, which was introduced last year at Baselworld, is a bold timepiece with an angular case design but in a more conservative size than its predecssor, the Concord C1.

By Jason Pitsch

For the C2 collection Concord has cretaed a more restrained and refined design. Similar to the C1, the C2 is presented in an octangular steel case, but it comes in a singificantly smaller 43 x 12.75 mm case. With less diameter, less thickness and softer angles, the C2 is now more comfortable, and arguably, better looking on an average size wrist than the bulky C1. In recent years big watches were in style. That is no longer true. Brands are now tailoring and perfecting watch case sizes for current consumers tastes, which means companies are designing watches as thin as possible in most cases; and with diameters in the 39 to 43 mm range.

The C2 GraffitiGrey steel case has been treated with a matte black PVD finish, with polished beveled case and lug edges. The screws and edges of the holes where the strap is secured to the case, are also polished. The execution of alternating matte and polished finishes gives the watch a little sparkle while remaining understated. The bezel features two parts: one is the black PVD top ring with a matte surface and polished edges and the second is a grey ring with grooves that give the watch its signature Concord look.

A flat 2mm thick black smoked sapphire crystal gives the watch a distinctive appearance. Blacking out the entire sapphire crystal has been done before, although it is somewhat trendy. The time is readable in most light, even with the darkened crystal, so the blacked out crystal is not necessarily a bad thing. At the same time, something that is trendy, is not always a good thing and it makes you wonder if it more of a gimmick than a feature that actually adds value.

Powering the C2 collection is a Swiss self-winding ETA 2894-2 with 37 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and a power reserve of 42-hours. The movement has Geneva stripes and a Concord signed oscillating weight. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph and date.

The multi-level black dial has grey indexes, matte hour markers and Dauphine hands which are asymmetrical and hollowed out. Low-light visibility is enhanced by luminous treated hour and minute hands, and indexes. Small seconds are indicated by a rotating disc, a signature feature on all C2 timepieces ( a feature we really like).

The case back is solid with a huge engraved and polished C2 logo which is accented by the faded black matte background. Screw-down crown and solid case back secured by 6 screws. Water-resistant to 100 meters.

The strap features premium alligator leather that is finished in glossy grey with black accent stitching and a black PVD-treated stainless fold over clasp pin buckle.

Overall, the Concord C2, and more specifically, the C2 GraffitiGrey, is a step in the right direction for a brand that appears to still be trying to gain traction in the ultra competitive watch market. But is it enough? I guess only time will tell.
