The DOXA Files: The New SUB 300T Clive Cussler Promises Intrigue & Adventure
At a recent launch event in New York City filled with mystery and the promise of adventure, DOXA introduced its new SUB 300T Clive Cussler. Allow us to set the scene.
As it turns out, Clive Cussler, one of America’s most beloved adventure novelists, was also a keen diver and undersea philanthropist. So, in celebration of his life and legacy, DOXA recently released a very special edition of its SUB 300T timepiece in New York City.
Your dossier is as follows…
The Scene
The posh New York Yacht Club (NYYC) in Midtown Manhattan, with its commensurate dress code (strictly enforced) and its VIP-friendly “nobody’s eyes only” photography restrictions.
However, despite the NYYC’s punctilious restrictions, its restrictive access made it the perfect, intrigue-laden venue to debut this new timepiece, and thus, a good time was had by all. Some members of the watch press even took to the dance floor!
The Subject
The late Clive Cussler, author of over 85 adventure novels, like Raise the Titanic and Sahara (both of which became motion pictures). Selling more than 100 million copies over his 55-year writing career, he passed away in 2020, but his legacy lives on beyond his books.
For you see, as an avid diver and undersea fan, he was also responsible for discovering scores of shipwrecks through his non-profit National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA).
Cussler’s passion for diving, and his fondness for DOXA gear, made its way into his pages often, most notably via his fictional hero Dirk Pitt’s famous orange-dial DOXA dive watch. Both actor Matthew McConaughey and actor Richard Jordan have portrayed the hero on-screen.
The Watch
The new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler not only stays true to the brand’s recognized toughness and legitimate, technical tool watch chops, but it also blends in some apt, whimsical literary license to honor the author and diving history itself.
The handmade dial evokes the profile of a vintage compass; meanwhile, an aged steel appearance and patina have been applied to the case, bracelet, clasp, and pin buckle, resulting in a weathered watch fit for the wrist of an action hero. “Cussler’s internationally famed novels were a natural platform for DOXA watches, highlighting them as essential tools for his heroic characters,” DOXA CEO Jan Edocs said in the press release for the watch.
Clive Cussler’s son, Dirk Cussler (an author himself), also went on to note: “Bold. Creative. Adventurous. It was how my father approached life. [Those sentiments are] perfectly captured in this DOXA watch that bears his name.”
Additionally, the names of shipwrecks and other significant NUMA artifacts and finds are engraved on the SUB 300T Clive Cussler’s case back, and the author’s birthdate (July 5, 1931) is captured with the dates of 7, 15, and 31 presented in red in the 3 o’clock date window.
The Specs
Available on a patinated version of DOXA’s signature “beads of rice” steel bracelet (with a tough-looking khaki NATO strap also included), the DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler retails for $2,690. An optional FKM rubber strap with aged steel coating and clasp is also available for an additional $490.
This special edition carries all the performance specifications of a traditional SUB 300T, so expect a mechanical Swiss movement with 38 hours of power reserve and an astounding 120 ATM (about 4,000 feet) of water resistance to ride along on your wrist the next time you set out to solve a mystery, save the world, take out the bad guy, or simply get on with your adventurous life.
