Only Watch 2015 at Geneva

Results of the Only Watch charity auction

I cannot explain the feeling this morning while getting ready for the first auction of the season. For the first time since creation, Only watch, the charity auction for research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is held in Geneva under the hammer of Aurel Bacs.

It would have taken a lot more than a sunny Saturday afternoon to take the audience away from the auction hall. Already, you can feel that all who have come, came with a reason for this long expected event. A unique moment of sharing that gathers the manufactures and the watch collectors around an auctioneer. All are giving their time for a noble cause.

Patek Philippe reference 5016-A The Patek Philippe reference 5016-A for Only Watch 2015 was sold for 7.3M CHF

The selection of timepieces this year again is simply breathtaking. The only star of the afternoon is the Patek Philippe reference 5016-A merely in stainless steel. Patek Philippe shows once again that they are leading on the market and this has a simple explanation. They are best at what they are doing. They have this incredible talent to turn something as common as steel into a work-of-art. I am not aiming at being too brutal but the 7.3 million swiss francs are truly well deserved and well invested both for the charitable purpose that this amount will serve and as a recognition to a masterpiece.

FP Journe Tourbillon Souverain Bleu Only Watch F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Bleu Only Watch reached 550.000CHF

But not only Patek Philippe was able to encourage us to dream through the choice of material. F.P. Journe, for his first participation, also shared the best of his art with a stunning “Tourbillon Souverain Bleu” in tantalum that hammered at 550.000 swiss francs. The aluminium case of the Leroy unique piece allowed it to fetch an unexpected 75.000 swiss francs.

TUDOR Black Bay One for Only Watch 2015 The Tudor Black Bay One reached 375.000 CHF

The Tudor made it as an outsider and left all behind reaching the unbelievable sum of 375.000 swiss francs i.e. over 100 times above estimate !!!! Whether it is the incredible generosity of the buyer or his highly refined taste for the beautiful, history will not tell but he will be remembered. The ladies watches, also under-represented in my view among the total 44 lots, did well too with a Boucheron selling above estimate at 45.000 swiss francs.

H.Moser & Cie for only watch H.Moser & Cie for Only Watch

As a final statement, I would like to take my hat off to H. Moser & Cie with their date display that looks shaky. Indeed, it was the children of the manufacture’s watchmakers who painted the date on the dial. What a sweet idea considering the charity auction is aiming at looking after children itself.
