I well remember hovering at an altitude of over 3000 metres on a magical helicopter ride between Lausanne and St-Moritz, over the sun-kissed pure and infinite, snowy white Alpine wastes, test-flying the Oris Big Crown Propilot Altimeter, a functional mechanical model, complete with precision in-flight altitude and barometric pressure indicator. 2017 saw the roll-out of the REGA limited edition in homage to the Swiss emergency air-rescue services. Swissness and independence, all rolled into one

Already as a child, I was fascinated by the logo of this historical brand, long associated with the manufacture of such legendary calibres as the Venus. In celebration of its original birthplace, namely the UNESCO-protected city of La Chaux-de-Fonds, this latest iteration to be born of a consummate passion and desire for watchmaking independence, chose to be named after its native city. And as I love the colour green and the kinetic movements of the second retrograde hand, I find it impossible to resist. OK, I must confess, the dial-side tourbillon *is* a spectacular treat for the eyes.

Rarely has a brand so successfully spanned two epic worlds with such panache, from the covetable red carpet events so beloved of movie goers through to Italy's winding country roads dotted with classic cars taking part in the Mille Miglia. Thankfully, male celebrities were a part of the picture at the 70th Cannes Festival in 2017. Will Smith, no less, was spotted wearing one of the 8 editions of the supremely desirable L.U.C Lunar One Black Tie at an event hosted by Rihanna, officially "in love with Chopard" and ambassadress of the brand. Boasting a discreet spattering of diamonds, QP and Moon Phases, 43 mm in diameter… Chopard's Black Tie is a lunar masterpiece!

Featuring 'pump' pushers and an enlarged 30-minute chronograph register (at 3 o'clock), the BigEye sends us hurtling back in time to the sports chronographs of the 60s. Everything in this piece is reminiscent of the codes and styling of an era still used as a reference today, even though the 41 mm diameter watch case presents a more contemporary vision. Unusually for Longines, the price is more aggressive considering it's an authentic chronograph with integrated column wheel.

The result of the “Autavia Cup”, which enabled the brand's fans to vote for the model they'd most like to see series-produced, this watch accurately reflects the motor sports universe so dear to Jack Heuer. The steel bracelet adopts the codes of the original version, yet sports a highly ergonomic contemporary design. Undeniably a TAG, but also very much a Heuer, costing less than CHF 5,000.-.
