Wonka Whimsy, Red Dot Awards, and GVA Watch Days: A Watch News Recap
It was another brisk week for watch (and watch-adjacent) news. Here are some breaking news tidbits that may have slipped past your radar.
Here are some of the recent news stories you may have missed.
Geneva Watch Days Plans
Slated for September 2 to 6 this year, plans for the seventh edition of the decentralized Geneva Watch Days event are growing at a more-than-healthy pace to celebrate the spirit of the city and its watch community.
Jean-Christophe Babin, president of the organization, comments: “This year, Geneva Watch Days enters a new cycle of development, while remaining true to the spirit that has driven it since its creation: openness, innovation, decentralization, and proximity.” At last count, 68 brands (from Akhor to Zenith) have signed on as exhibitors.
Moreover, Watchonista’s own Ash Longet will be moderating two invitation-only Power Breakfast panels during the event weekend on both Saturday, the 5th (titled “Succession, Capital & Continuity”) and Sunday, the 6th (titled “Partnerships, Ambassadors & Communities”).
You can review an updated show agenda here. Of course, plan to tune back in to Watchonista for expert Geneva Watch Days coverage as the show dates arrive.
Red Dot Awards for Ressence, Hublot, NOMOS Glashütte, and MeisterSinger
Founded as the Verein Industrieform, an association initiated by the German manufacturer Krups, the international Red Dot Awards, as it is now called, has recognized outstanding design, creativity, and innovation in product design, brands and communication design, and design concepts since 1954.
The 2026 winners, which were announced last week, included awards in the “Product Design – Watches” category for Ressence, Hublot, NOMOS Glashütte, and MeisterSinger.
For Hublot, the Big Bang 20th Anniversary King Gold Ceramic brought home a Red Dot Award for its skillful reinterpretation that embodies precision watchmaking in an elegant fusion of gold and ceramic. Meanwhile, MeisterSinger’s Panthero Jumping Hour won for its distinctive approach to time display thanks to its reinterpretation of the single-hand principle with a layered dial and a moving, non-measuring element.
In addition to winning Red Dot Awards in the “Product Design – Watches” category, Ressence’s Type 3 Marc Newson and NOMOS Glashütte’s Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer silver were named “Best of the Best” in the category.
A “well-done” pat on the back to this quartet of watch brands.
Seiko x Rowing Blazers Sells Out Crazy Fast
Fourth time around was decidedly the charm for Seiko’s ongoing timepiece collaborations with New York cult clothing brand Rowing Blazers. Reddit groups and other sources are reporting that the 2,5000 editions of the green dial model are already sold out, and they sold out not in a matter of hours, but in a matter of “hour.”
The distinctive checkered bezel of the dive watches, created in collaboration with the clothing brand and vintage expert Eric Wind of Wind Vintage, was recently offered in limited capsule editions, with both a 42mm blue-dial version and a 38mm green-dial version. By all reports, they sold out faster than a scuba diver with a wetsuit on fire jumps into the water.
Norqain’s Golden Ticket
Sporty Swiss watchmaker Norqain may have come down with a case of the “Oompa-Loompas.” Likely inspired by the classic 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, one of the watchmaker’s 500 limited editions of its Freedom GMT Enjoy Life “Holiday Limited Editions” comes packaged with a hidden “golden ticket” entitling the buyer and an adult guest to a six-night luxury getaway to the exclusive Ayada Maldives island resort.
Norqain is sitting on the lucky winner pending a full announcement in September, but even if you miss out, the colorful 40mm stainless timepiece is more than adventure-travel ready: A COSC-certified in-house caliber NN20/2 movement created with Kenissi, a jumping-hour GMT function, and a vibrant world map dial and case back badging combine on a steel bracelet for $6,490 or a white rubber strap for $6,290.
Wimbledon Wins for Rolex (Sinner), Rado (Nosková)
The tennis match’s finals weekend saw a dramatic showdown in the men's singles competition between Italian Jannik Sinner and Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Despite a strong start by the Jacob & Co. backed Zverev, Sinner broke a tie in the second set and went on to dominate the rest of the competition for his second win at Wimbledon. Sinner has been a Rolex testimonee since 2020.
Earlier, the women’s singles face-off between its two Czech competitors, Linda Nosková and Caroline Muchová, told a battle story fit for the Wimbledon archives. At just 21 years of age, Nosková scratched her way back from missing out on no less than five Championship point opportunities in the second set to beat challenger Muchovà 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 for her first Wimbledon title. Nosková is closely associated with watchmaker Rado as one its YoungStar ambassadors.
