The Oris Star Edition: A Modern Revival of Swiss Watchmaking Independence

A faithful revival of Oris’s 1966 milestone, the Oris Star Edition reinterprets a modernist barrel-shaped design while celebrating the brand’s breakthrough into in-house mechanical innovation after regulatory liberation.

The Oris Star Edition is more than a heritage reissue; unveiled during Watches and Wonders Geneva, it is a narrative piece of Swiss watch history reborn for contemporary collectors. Rooted in the pivotal 1960s transformation of Oris, this vintage-inspired watch reflects both technical emancipation and design modernism.

At its core, the Oris Star Edition commemorates a defining moment when Oris overcame the Swiss Watch Statute and transitioned into true mechanical independence. The result is a Swiss mechanical watch that bridges industrial history with modern craftsmanship.

This release matters because it revives the original Oris Star spirit – an early lever escapement watch era – while aligning it with today’s expectations of precision, affordability, and refined design language.

From Heritage to Wrist Culture

Oris built its identity in the shadow of regulation during the Swiss Watch Statute era, which began in 1934. Originally meant to protect the Swiss watch industry during the global economic crisis of the 1930s, the statute ended up restricting innovation by confining many brands, such as Oris, to pin-lever escapements. The arrival of Dr. Rolf Portmann marked a turning point in Swiss watchmaking history, leading to the repeal of the statute in 1965.

This liberation allowed Oris to develop proper mechanical lever escapement watches, culminating in the original Oris Star in 1966. The modern Oris Star Edition revisits this turning point, reinforcing the brand’s legacy of independence and mechanical authenticity.

The Heartbeat Behind the Design

Inside the Oris Star Edition is the Oris Calibre 733, a “Swiss Made” automatic movement based on a reliable Sellita architecture. It delivers a 41-hour power reserve and supports central hours, minutes, seconds, and a date complication. The movement includes fine timing regulation and stop-second functionality for precise synchronization.

While not a Master Chronometer or chronometer-certified movement, the Calibre 733 reflects Oris’s philosophy of accessible mechanical excellence and durable Swiss engineering. Thus, this Swiss mechanical watch continues the legacy of Oris’s early lever escapement innovation, updated for modern reliability and serviceability.

A Dial That Speaks 1960s Modernism

The dial of the Oris Star Edition is a direct homage to 1960s modernism. A silvery matte surface provides a clean backdrop for twin baton hour markers and square-tipped hands filled with Super-LumiNova.

A distinctive asymmetrical date window at 3 o’clock adds visual tension while preserving balance. The typography – “Star,” “Automatic,” and “26 Jewels” – reinforces its archival authenticity by referencing the period’s original design language.

A plexi-crystal box glass completes the aesthetic, enhancing distortion at angles and reinforcing the identity of a vintage-inspired watch rather than a purely contemporary sports model.

Everyday Elegance, Mid-Century Proportions

The case measures 35mm, staying faithful to mid-century proportions. Crafted from stainless steel, it features a barrel-shaped profile with seamlessly integrated lugs that define its architectural silhouette.

At 11.1mm thick and with a 41.5mm lug-to-lug measurement, the watch also maintains an elegant wrist presence without excessive bulk. Meanwhile, its screwdown crown and 5 bar water resistance ensure daily practicality.

The black leather strap reinforces the retro character while maintaining modern comfort. Its overall finishing emphasizes understated refinement, aligning the Oris Star Edition with classic Swiss mechanical watchmaking traditions.

Why This Watch Still Matters Today

The Oris Star Edition stands as a tribute to one of the most transformative periods in Swiss watchmaking history. It highlights how regulatory constraints once shaped – and ultimately strengthened – the identity of independent brands like Oris.

For collectors, this model represents a bridge between historical authenticity and modern wearability. It reflects a broader industry trend toward heritage-driven vintage-inspired watches that prioritize storytelling as much as mechanics.

More broadly, the Oris Star Edition reinforces the enduring appeal of mechanical watches in an era dominated by digital precision. It is both a commemorative object and a living continuation of Oris’s independent spirit.
