The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux is Magical Minimalism
The Swiss brand celebrates its 40th anniversary with a magical, world-first chronograph complication.
In 2018, I had the privilege of visiting Parmigiani Fleurier’s workshops in Fleurier, Switzerland. A group of journalists toured not only the production facilities but also the atelier where the maison still repaired centuries-old clocks and automatons.
These ornate antique mechanisms were the definition of maximalist. But in the intervening eight years since that trip, Parmigiani’s wristwatches have become increasingly minimalist with complications that reveal themselves only when called upon.
In fact, when it comes to describing pieces like the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante and the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante, you could call them “Magical Minimalism.” And now the Tonda PF Chronograph Mystérieux joins this garden of horological delights.
Invisible Touch
Before launching his eponymous brand in 1976, Michel Parmigiani devoted much of his life to restoring some of the most complex horological creations ever conceived. But his practice was never about preservation alone. Through taking these magical mechanisms apart and then rebuilding them, he also discovered that he wanted to explore the possibilities of what hadn’t been done yet.
Thirty years on, Parmigiani Fleurier’s curiosity continues to astound collectors, as it unveiled the new Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux – the brand’s third “World ‘s First” complication to be realized in just four years – at Watches and Wonders 2026 this past week.
Just as beguiling as its predecessors, this chronograph continues the storyline of presenting a complication that appears only on demand, then, once no longer in use, withdraws, restoring the purity of the dial.
At first glance, it looks like an elegant three-hander with a mineral blue dial and rhodium-plated gold hour and minute hands. Closer inspection reveals a monopusher subtly poking out on the left side of the stainless steel case near 8 o’clock.
How does it work?
With one press of the pusher, the three rhodium-plated hands (two of which have been hiding rose gold cousins beneath them) execute an instantaneous flyback to 12 o’clock and become chronograph hands. Meanwhile, the rose gold hands, which now display regular time, remain where they were. Thus, the dual display organizes itself without fuss.
A second press stops the chronograph function, immediately capturing the hour, minute, and second readings (it’s kind of like a traditional stopwatch in this regard).
Finally, a third press resets everything, and the seconds hand resumes its natural course, while the rhodium-plated hands realign themselves atop the rose gold hands to resume their roles as indicators of the current time.
Building A Mystery
In a press release for the launch, Parmigiani Fleurier states that this complication is “not an aesthetic gesture. It is a philosophy. Mechanics are placed at the service of experience, and experience honors the hierarchy of time.”
Nor is this creation about simply adding a chronograph to the Tonda PF family. Again, the purpose behind this creation stems from curiosity and the question: “How can a historically demonstrative function be reconciled with an architecture founded upon purity, balance, and the primacy of civil time?”
Because there was no existing construction that would allow for alternating between deployment and disappearance, the Maison created the calibre PF053 exclusively for the Mystérieux.
Designing an integrated chronograph is already a tricky proposition, as it remains one of the most demanding constructions in traditional watchmaking. Thus, to pull off this sleight of hands (pun intended), Parmigiani had to rethink the calibration of energy management and create a form of mechanical memory that is capable of turning the chronograph function invisible.
The automatic caliber PF053 manufacture movement was developed as an autonomous structure. The movement, with an integrated column wheel, is comprised of 362 components. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). Its power reserve extends to 60 hours. It is finished and decorated in accordance with Parmigiani Fleurier’s standards.
Final Thoughts
Where most chronographs distribute functions across two separate pushers, Parmigiani Fleurier orchestrates the entire sequence through one. Visually and technically, the monopusher complements this complex mechanism. Not only is reading the display immediate, but pressing a single button feels natural.
One never feels like one is wrestling with this watch. Activation becomes, as the brand itself says, “a living interaction.”
