G-SHOCK and Team Land Cruiser Toyota Pair Up for a Tough, Dakar Rally-Inspired Mudmaster
The new Master of G Mudmaster GWG-B1000 timepiece is a particularly brawny new collaboration that serves as a practically indestructible ode to one of motorsports’ most grueling off-road competitions. How tough is it? Let’s find out.
The beginning of 2026 has been rife with timepiece-meets-automotive stories. After all, Watchonista Lounge readers just got back-to-back scoops on Breitling’s new partnership with Aston Martin and its Aramco F1 team and Chopard’s latest collaborative piece with Milan-based coach builder Zagato.
However, while F1 racing is an almost scientific exercise of precision and performance, off-road races, like the Gumball 3000, have become more of a chaotic, no-holds-barred, multi-day scramble to the finish. That said, the off-road Dakar Rally, which began in 1978 as the Paris-Dakar Rally and concluded its 2026 edition last month in Saudi Arabia, somehow combines elements of both those very divergent vibes.
As invited press, I was lucky enough to do a little off-road driving during the rally a few years back when it was held in the Sahara. It was an experience I will never forget.
The unofficial driving tip I received was: If you see some locals milling around along the desert course, slow down. Of course, most of the time they were just interested spectators, but occasionally some fun-loving local pranksters would introduce their own homemade obstacles to the already challenging route.
Well, after checking out the specs for G-SHOCK’s new Master of G Mudmaster GWG-B1000, I can’t help but think that if I had been wearing THAT on my wrist back then, my stress level might have been reduced while I was driving.
Driving in the Dark?
With the officially named Team Land Cruiser Toyota Auto Body (TLC) drivers garnering both third-in-class and fifth-in-stock trophies this year, those finishes certainly speak to the toughness of the Japanese automaker’s off-road capabilities. And when you bring up toughness in the watch world, G-SHOCK (and its parent company Casio) should quickly come to mind; the collaboration is apt, to say the least.
Combining a precision-forged metal exterior with G-SHOCK’s now-legendary shock-absorbing carbon fiber-reinforced resin case approach, this new Mudmaster certainly qualifies as Toyota-tough. However, its all-black execution evokes the most challenging portions of the Dakar Rally: desert driving at night, perhaps relying on just moonlight (if you’re lucky).
G-SHOCK’s black ion-plating finish adds dynamic visual appeal and sophistication to the familiar, burly, technical presentation of the Mudmaster’s 58.7mm by 52.1mm steel and carbon case components, while the rugged double-perforated resin band carries a sand-at-night color and texture that reinforces both the racing and location inspirations. A gold-tone “TLC”-badged strap fastener throws in a welcome pop of color, to boot.
The multi-colored dial design does take on a dashboard-like nav-system effect in its use of real estate. However, that said, even with the litany of radio-controlled, solar-powered, Bluetooth-enabled, digital sensor-driven technology that you can expect from any modern G-SHOCK, the data capabilities of the Master of G Mudmaster GWG-B3100 go well beyond run-of-the-mill driving benefits.
Wrist Tech
World time, customized timers and alarms, and all that, sure. But also expect direction, GPS, altitude, temperature, and barometric pressure to be tracked and available for your review. While sudden black-out sandstorms are a rarity at the Dakar Rally, this watch is well-equipped to keep you up to date on driving conditions, wherever you are.
For simpler course guidance, entering a specific destination in the watch’s app turns the sub-dial at 3 o’clock into an ever-present compass to keep you on track. Overall legibility is also purpose-built for challenging conditions, with double-LED lighting illuminating your wrist companion.
Additional team badging on the case back and strap fill out the Toyota connection, but a long-lasting 6-month rechargeable battery full-tank during normal usage (extended to a 24-month charge when stored with the watch’s power-save function) ensures that this new Mudmaster can serve as a constant driving companion, even if you most of your driving is just hopefully obstacle-free trips to the grocery store and back.
Introduced this month and priced at $970, you can learn more about the Master of G Mudmaster GWG-B3100 at the G-SHOCK website.
