A. Lange & Söhne’s Guide to the Upcoming Concours of Elegance Germany

The next stop for the watchmaker’s dedicated partnerships with classic car events happens on the shores of Bavaria’s lovely Lake Tegernsee, so expect impeccable automotive examples, some Alpine fun, and a particularly special A. Lange & Söhne moment or two. Here is an insider guide on what not to miss!

This year’s Concours of Elegance Germany, presented by A. Lange & Söhne, will run from July 25th to 26th in Gut Kaltenbrunn along picturesque Lake Tegernsee with the stunning Bavarian Alps as a backdrop.

In its second year as the presenting partner for this sophomore running of the concours, A. Lange & Söhne anticipates supporting a curated, potent, but also lively automotive event, incorporating exhibits, auctions, and luxurious touches (that go beyond the four-wheeled variety), with plenty of surprises in store.

The Lake Tegernsee concours follows the recent Lange-sponsored Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy in May, and represents the midpoint of the watchmaker’s special plans at classic car events for the next few months, so please stay tuned to The Lounge by Watchonista as even more rolls out.

Our concours partnerships take us from Italy to Germany to the U.K. to Newport, Rhode Island in the U.S. – and while the excellence and quality of the experience for fans of classic cars and fine watchmaking is always a constant, each location influences the flavor of each event.

"After a successful premiere last year, it is a pleasure for us to once again be able to support the Concours of Elegance Germany in our manufacture’s home country, which is known for its automotive passion. As a partner from the very beginning, we are proud to be part of this special event, as it brings together enthusiasts with a sweet spot for the extraordinary and an appreciation for authentic craftsmanship and technical sophistication. Here, the parallels between classic automobile culture and traditional fine watchmaking become tangible,” said A. Lange & Söhne CEO Wilhelm Schmid.

Don’t Miss…

To lead things off, it is highly recommended that you examine your program upon arrival because, as we hinted at earlier, there will be a first-of-its-kind event from A. Lange & Söhne. We cannot share the details at this time, but we can assure you that it will not disappoint!

Then there is, of course, the showstopping Concours Car Parade and awards ceremony, which create a stunning one-two event punch for the weekend’s festivities.

During the Concours Car Parade on Friday, July 25th, the glory of the slowly passing concours cars presents an unmatched opportunity to review the multitude of participating vehicles (last year’s concours featured a curated fleet of about 50 cars) in all their beauty and motion.

Taking place on Saturday, July 26th, the awards ceremony is not just a recognition of the exceptional vehicles that participate; it is a profound celebration of automotive history and design.

Take, for example, the Concours of Elegance Germany’s unique Decades Award program, which honors outstanding classic cars from each decade, from the 1920s to today. A bit of an outlier award theme for a concours, these awards take an inherently historical angle that only enhances our enduring fascination with excellence in automotive design and how it has changed over the years.

A rarely seen, “yeti”-grade 1976 Monteverde Palm Beach droptop was the winner from the 1970s-era cars last year. Meanwhile, the overall Best of Show award went to owner Hans-Jörg Hübner and his rare metallic masterpiece: a 1939 Lancia Astura Pinin Farina Cabriolet.

Expect the Unexpected

Besides the Decades Awards, there are a few things that truly set the Concours of Elegance Germany apart. First, there is a dedicated program, inspired by Bertha Benz (the first officially recognized woman motorist), for superb classic cars owned by women called the Ladies’ Concours.

Then, there is an event for collectors under the age of 35 called the Emerging Collectors Concours, which aims to support and celebrate the future of the classic car collecting community.

Lastly, there is the whimsical Junior Concours, which features exquisite, hand-built, small-scale powered and pedaled “cars” that fans of all ages can enjoy.

These programs say a lot about how this show is embracing the future of classic car collecting. After all, the profile of who a car enthusiast is has definitely become more inclusive and diverse (as it should be), so it’s refreshing to see programs like these at a concours event.

Like the Decades and Best of Show awards, these events will occur on Saturday, July 26th

The Auction Scene

Of course, the opportunity to acquire a pedigreed classic car at auction, to start or add to your garage, is a constant focus at concours events. In Gut Kaltenbrunn, however, attendees will have the opportunity to peruse a curated selection of more than 35 pieces of Formula 1 memorabilia, ranging from race-worn helmets to wristwatches, that are being offered during RM Sotheby’s 300-lot “The Champions – Schumacher and F1 Legends” auction.

This memorabilia exhibit at the show will offer guests the opportunity to see for themselves some of the superlative lots being offered during this auction.

Two More Pit Stops to Go

With Lange-sponsored concours coming up in the U.K. in September (the Concours of Elegance Hampton Court Palace) and in the U.S. in early October (the Audrain Newport Concours and Motor Week), the season is only just heating up.

Watchonista will be on hand to provide insider guides and post-concours highlights and results for both. So, keep your watch wound and your engine running!
