Into the Wild Blue: Two New Azure Longines Spirit Pilot Timepieces Soar

New Longines Spirit Pilot references, a three-hand and a flyback chronograph, speak to the watchmaker’s nearly century-long heritage of aviation excellence (with a shared, handsome blue colorway, to boot).

Without attempting to fully explore Swiss watchmaker Longines’ unparalleled experience creating timepieces for pilots, let me just drop a couple of marquee names: Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart.

Lindy collaborated with the watchmaker after his historic transatlantic flight to design the iconic, so-called Hour Angle watch in 1931, and continued to sport Longines timepieces throughout his flying career. Meanwhile, the legendary female aviator famously wore a Longines Mono-Pusher Chronograph during her flying milestones. Enough said?

The Spirit of Flight

While the Spirit Pilot line is a relatively recent collection (introduced in 2025 to bring the maker’s rich flying history into the more-contemporary Spirit family), it carries a cockpit full of the brand’s behind-the-stick gravitas.

Certainly, if you take the history of aviation into account, a chronograph-equipped pilot’s watch is a navigational boon, but since the era of advanced avionics instrumentation, a more standard wrist chronograph function may carry a bit more historic romance than in-flight practicality.

However, especially during very quick, very complex navigation maneuvers where you might be changing your heading, altitude, and orientation every few seconds, a flyback chronograph could be a more welcome visual backup in the cockpit, allowing you to quickly reset the chronograph back to zero over and over again, on the, ahem, fly.

(Fun Fact: Longines was a pioneer in the development of flyback chronograph technology in the 1930s, filing a patent for its approach in 1935.)

Of course, a flyback chronograph also gives you a more flexible timing function for more pedestrian, everyday use (like timing how long it takes for your first piece of luggage to make it to the airport carousel, and then timing how much inexplicably longer it takes for your second bag to arrive, for example).

Longines Spirit Pilot Flyback

While the 39.5mm steel Longines Spirit Pilot Flyback introduced last year (and its three-hand sibling) were offered in a more vintage-inspired black colorway, this new 39.5mm steel blue flyback (with an even more pronounced blue mood thanks to its color-matched bi-directional ceramic bezel) connects the historic functional bona fides of its timing capabilities with an understated dose of the Spirit line’s contemporary flair.

Powered by the COSC-certified, hand-wound, 68-hour power reserve Longines calibre L792.4 movement, on view via the exhibition case back, this chronograph has an air of past-meets-present, albeit with up-to-date magnetism-fighting components like a silicon balance wheel.

A bicompax sub-dial layout of a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a permanent small seconds at 9 o’clock complete the technical message of this timepiece without overdoing its inherent classicism. It’s the pilot’s choice on whether to go with the burly three-link steel bracelet or the sleek Swiss-made textured blue rubber strap.

In this new three-hand execution, the dial’s relative purity and simplicity (sans sub-registers), lack of rotating bezel, and pusher-less case design put the striking matte blue dial hue a bit more center stage than its complicated sibling.

Still, even in the blueness, the clean legibility box expected of a timepiece with the word “pilot” in its name is fully checked. Enhanced by silvered hands and a full set of applied Arabic hour indices, the 39mm steel Longines Spirit Pilot packs a great deal of aviation authenticity into a package that could be described as a hybrid of a traditional pilot watch with some contemporary sports watch DNA.

The Spirit Pilot’s power plant is the COSC-certified, self-winding, 72-hour power reserve Longines calibre L888.4 movement, with all the edgy anti-magnetism technology of its sister movement above. Again, captain’s choice of a steel three-link bracelet or blue rubber strap.
