Are Local Watch Events Changing the Game for Collectors?

As summer turns into autumn, the horological world is poised for a series of events that promise to captivate the attention of collectors, enthusiasts, and industry insiders alike.

From the serene peaks of Aspen to the bustling streets of Hong Kong, a constellation of “watch weeks” and “watch days” will span the globe this August and October.

But as these localized events rise in prominence, we must ask: Has the era of globalization been replaced by a more localized, consumer-focused mindset?

Indeed, are brands and retailers pivoting away from mega-events in favor of more intimate, personalized engagements?

From Global to Local: A Strategic Pivot

The decline in global event participation is telling. Baselworld, once the largest watch and jewelry fair, saw a significant drop in exhibitors and attendees, leading to its eventual cancellation.

Similarly, SIHH, now rebranded as Watches and Wonders, has adapted its format, incorporating more localized editions in key markets. In contrast, Dubai Watch Week has thrived, drawing a diverse and engaged audience with its focus on education, discussion, and community.

Moreover, the 2023 edition of Dubai Watch Week set a benchmark for local events by seeing over 23,000 visitors walk through its doors. With a 42% increase in attendance from the previous edition, Dubai Watch Week 2023’s growth is a testament to its global appeal while maintaining a local touch.

Why Businesses Favor Local Events

Importantly, businesses increasingly favor localized events for several reasons. Firstly, local shows offer a more sustainable and cost-effective model than large-scale global shows. That is because the logistical complexities and significant expenses associated with international events are minimized.

Secondly, localized events allow brands to target specific markets more effectively, tailoring their strategies to regional tastes and trends. This localized approach enhances brand loyalty and customer satisfaction. Plus, the intimate nature of local events facilitates more meaningful interactions between brands and customers.

In a world where personal connection is increasingly valued, these bespoke experiences provide brands and retailers a competitive edge in adapting to changing consumer behaviors and market dynamics.
