Vacheron Constantin Celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the Overseas with Two New Models
The new Self-Winding Ultra-Thin and the Dual Time Cardinal Points are worthy additions to the Overseas legacy.
This year, Vacheron Constantin is marking the 30th anniversary of its iconic Overseas, a sport luxury watch that has become one of the brand’s most recognizable collections – and that’s saying a lot for a manufacture has been operating continuously since 1755.
Leading up to Watches and Wonders, enthusiasts were expecting Vacheron Constantin to mark the occasion with some heavy-hitting special editions. And with the release of the Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin and the Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points this week in Geneva, I think it is safe to say that the brand did not disappoint.
Let’s take a look!
Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin
The design language of the Overseas collection stretches all the way back to 1880 and the birth of the brand’s Maltese Cross logo. And the Overseas clearly shares DNA with the legendary 222 from 1977. That model, designed by Jörg Hysek, featured a barrel-shaped case, a scalloped bezel, and a tiny Maltese cross inlaid at the bottom right of the case.
In 1996, Vacheron introduced the first official Overseas. Designed by Dino Modolo and Vacheron’s Vincent Kaufmann, it reconceptualized the sporty spirit 222 and modernized it for the global traveler. It featured a 37mm case, a distinctive fluted bezel echoing the Maltese cross, and 150m of water resistance.
In the intervening decades, the Overseas has easily adapted to the watch world’s whims. It has been upsized to 42mm in the 2000s. The integrated metal bracelet was modified with links shaped like half-Maltese crosses. And now, as more collectors opt for lighter, more wearable watches, they are getting thinner.
The Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin is a limited edition of 255 individually numbered pieces. Its movement – the Calibre 2550 – measures in at a mere 2.4mm in thickness yet still packs an 80-hour power reserve. However, to get peak performance in such a skinny package required seven years of research and development.
This innovative mechanism integrates the micro-rotor directly into the main plate. The gear train has been reconfigured with a suspended double barrel and a compact single-level gear train to provide premium precision in a 39.5mm 950 platinum case that is only 7.35mm thick.
The materials make the watch feel more elegant than just steel, but the color of the platinum still makes it feel sporty.
Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points
Sporty and luxurious. The Overseas was conceived as the ideal traveling companion for global adventurers. As a result, the collection is lauded for its go-anywhere versatility. And the new Dual Time Cardinal Points is the perfect expression of the Overseas’ ability to code-switch.
In addition to the classic local-time indications, the Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points features an arrow-tipped orange hand that displays the original (home) time, coupled with a matching-colored day/night indicator. The pointer-type date display at 6 o’clock is synchronized with local time and can be adjusted using a dedicated pusher. The two time zones at 12 o’clock can be adjusted by turning the crown in either direction.
The watch also includes an integrated, interchangeable titanium bracelet with a three-blade folding clasp, incorporating the collection's signature “Easy-fit” system to allow for quick adjustments without removing any links. Two rubber straps with interchangeable titanium folding clasp complete the offering: one orange with a texture inspired by the Maltese cross, the other matching the dial color with a textured pattern. Each strap can be changed in seconds without tools.
Vacheron Constantin is touting it as three watches in one. But as the name suggests (a cardinal point is one of the four main compass directions), this limited-edition travel watch offers an invitation to explore many new horizons.
The Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points was conceived and designed to deliver a degree of robustness that can withstand extreme conditions while also offering supreme comfort on the wrist.
This new collection is offered in a choice of four dial colors, each representing one of the four directions: white represents the icy North; brown symbolizes the vast plains of the South; green represents the verdant forests and tropical jungles of the West; and blue embodies the Eastern horizon where the sea and sky meet.
The sapphire crystal caseback invites horological explorers to discover the self-winding manufacture Calibre 5110 DT/3. A dark grey NAC treatment on the bridges echoes the color of the titanium case and contrasts with the hues of the visible elements of the gear train and with the 22K 3N yellow gold winding rotor, which features the signature Overseas compass rose. All these finishes proudly demonstrate the watchmaker’s savoir-faire.
