Timeless Creativity: Piaget and the Andy Warhol Foundation Unite for a Masterwork of Art and Watchmaking
A journey across history, art, and horology: how Piaget’s heritage of precision meets Andy Warhol’s Pop Art legacy in a limited-edition watch blending craft, color, and culture.
Since the late 19th century, Swiss watchmaker Piaget, founded in 1874 by Georges-Édouard Piaget, has been a pioneer of elegance, precision, and artistic ingenuity. Over time, Piaget evolved into a house synonymous not only with technical excellence but also with creative daring, weaving the worlds of watchmaking and fine art together.
This artistic spirit has long attracted connoisseurs and cultural icons worldwide, including Andy Warhol, one of the 20th century’s most influential visual artists. A leader of the Pop Art movement, his bold reimagining of everyday imagery made art accessible, provocative, and unforgettable.
Warhol was also a passionate collector of not only art but also watches. In fact, by the time of his death in 1987, he had over 300 watches in his collection. Seven of them were from Piaget, and one watch, in particular, stood out: a striking cushion-shaped piece Warhol purchased in 1973, originally known as the reference 15102.
Today, its story is reborn in a modern collaboration that celebrates Warhol’s creative genius and Piaget’s timeless craftsmanship.
Time Goes Pop
In 2024, Piaget strengthened its ties to the art world by forming an official partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
This collaboration honored Warhol’s appreciation for Piaget’s bold designs and revived one of his favorite models, now reintroduced as the Andy Warhol Watch. The partnership highlighted a shared spirit of creativity, blending watchmaking innovation with Warhol’s artistic legacy.
Now, just a year later, the alliance has reached another high point with the unveiling of the Andy Warhol Watch “Collage” Limited Edition.
Inspired by Warhol’s 1986 Polaroid collage self-portrait, this remarkable timepiece translates his visual experimentation into horology. Piaget transformed the playful fragmentation and repetition of the original artwork into a watch that is as much an artistic statement as it is a technical achievement.
More than a tribute, the “Collage” Limited Edition represents a dialogue between Warhol’s era and contemporary design. It connects his bold vision with Piaget’s pursuit of innovation, showing how art and watchmaking can merge to create timeless cultural icons.
With this release, Piaget celebrates Warhol while reaffirming its own role as a brand where artistry and craftsmanship converge. However, for Piaget, this collaboration was never about a simple tribute; it was about stepping directly into Warhol’s world.
Where Art Meets Craftsmanship
Led by artistic director Stéphanie Sivrière, the “Collage” design team dove deep into his universe with bold curiosity, exploring archives in New York, attending exhibitions, and uncovering layers of his artistry beyond the iconic soup cans, bananas, and Marilyns.
Their mission wasn’t to recycle famous motifs but to distill Warhol’s true essence – his fearless use of color, his love of experimentation, and his irreverent take on modern culture.
The outcome is a watch that channels Warhol’s fascination with color, layering, and reinterpretation while avoiding literal imitation. “[W]e wanted to express Warhol, but without being obvious. To suggest, rather than to show,” explained Sivrière in a press release. This guiding principle shaped a design that feels authentically Warholian yet unmistakably Piaget, reflecting the artist’s spirit without sacrificing the Maison’s own refined craftsmanship.
In achieving this balance, Piaget created more than a watch; they crafted a piece that resonates with Warhol’s experimental energy while honoring the brand’s tradition of elegance. The result is a wearable work of art, timeless, contemporary, and true to both Warhol’s vision and Piaget’s legacy of daring innovation.
Time in Full Color
The dial of the Andy Warhol Watch “Collage” Limited Edition is a miniature artwork crafted through the painstaking technique of marquetry. Its polished black onyx base recalls the shade of Warhol’s 1973 Piaget watch.
Onto this canvas, artisans inlaid slices of yellow Namibian serpentine, pink opal, and green chrysoprase. The result is a vibrant geometric composition that channels Warhol’s collages while radiating Piaget’s signature elegance.
Encasing the dial is a stepped 45mm case crafted in 18-karat yellow gold – an homage to the artist’s original watch, as well as a bold, luxurious statement in its own right. A green leather strap adds depth to the palette without distracting from the dial’s brilliance.
Inside, the watch houses Piaget’s in-house 501P1 self-winding calibre, offering a 40-hour power reserve and adorned with circular Côtes de Genève. On the case back, an engraving of Warhol’s self-portrait further binds art and timekeeping together.
