Think You Can Hang With Jimmy Chin? Panerai Is Betting On It With Its New Submersibles

He’s won an Oscar and skied off the top of Mount Everest. As a photographer, alpinist, filmmaker, and environmentalist, Jimmy Chin is in a class by himself. It’s no wonder, then, that Panerai chose him to be a brand ambassador - he’s a living, breathing embodiment of the values that Panerai holds dear. 

Accordingly, Panerai has released two limited edition watches in Chin’s honor: the Submersible Chrono Flyback Jimmy Chin Edition (PAM01207) and the Submersible Chrono Flyback Jimmy Chin Experience Edition (PAM01208). 

Jimmy Chin is a “mountain sports athlete” whose “intelligence, determination, and creativity guided him to historic accomplishments,” according to Panerai. The rugged Panerai Submersible Flyback is a fitting choice for the extreme adventurer. 
 

The Panerai Chrono Submersible Flyback Jimmy Chin Experience Edition (PAM01208) has a 47mm titanium case with black DLC (Diamond-Like-Coating), which is extremely resistant to friction, wear, and corrosion. It’s powered by the in-house P.9100 calibre automatic movement equipped with Panerai’s Incabloc anti-shock device. The movement has a full three days of power reserve and powers the hours, minutes, small seconds, chronograph flyback, and seconds reset. The chronograph’s dial has a central chronograph seconds hand, small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, and an hour counter at 3 o’clock. 
 

The Jimmy Chin Experience Edition’s dial is a shaded grey color punctuated by luminous hands and hour markers. It comes with two interchangeable straps – one crafted of grey technical fabric and rubber and the other of mostly environmentally friendly (but no less sturdy) recycled material. 

One hundred people, on the other hand, will have the opportunity to acquire the Panerai Submersible Chrono Flyback Jimmy Chin Edition (PAM01207). It has the same P.9100 anti-shock automatic chronograph movement and 47mm case size as the PAM01208. The PAM01207’s case, however, is made of sand-blasted titanium, giving it a much brighter finish than the Experience Edition. Priced at $19,400, the PAM01207 comes with the same two straps, a screwdriver to remove the buckle, and a tool to change the straps. 
 

Finally, each watch features an exclusive engraving on the caseback celebrating Chin’s many accomplishments. “It evokes Chin’s diverse and celebrated achievements: a dramatic mountain range, intersecting skis, and a United States flag, along with a Jimmy Chin Edition inscription,” said the brand in a statement. It’s stunning to look at and evocative of adventure, whether you’re an armchair traveler or a black diamond skier.
