Geneva Watch Days: Oris Doubles Down with a New Aquis Chrono and Charity Limited Edition
Oris debuts two dive watch offerings during Geneva Watch Days. One is a resplendent chronograph; the other is a heartfelt limited edition made in partnership with a leading sports league and benefiting child protection association. Dive deep, watch fans.
For Geneva Watch Days 2024, Hölstein-based brand Oris released two new dive models.
The first, the LFP Limited Edition, is a charity piece from the brand’s wildly popular Divers Sixty-Five collection benefiting France’s National Convention of Child Protection Associations and made in collaboration with the country’s Ligue de Football Professionnel.
The second, and the one we will discuss first, is a new 43.5mm Aquis Chronograph model. And since we haven’t seen an Aquis Chrono in a while, let’s begin by taking a quick look at the right side of its case.
Blue Crush
If you tend to almost fetishize brawny dive chronographs (guilty as charged), then you probably think that extending crown protectors to tie the screwdown crown and chrono pushers together, thus creating a prominent “control panel” on the right side of the case, is no less than a masterstroke of design.
This chunky one-two-three punch is a staple of Aquis Chronograph models, which, luckily for us, the brand has continued to embrace with the release of its newest Aquis Chronograph model at Geneva Watch Days 2024.
Beyond the piece’s 43.5mm steel case (water resistant to 300 meters) and its “control panel,” there is plenty more to like about Oris’ new Aquis Chronograph. Specifically, powered by a Sellita-based Calibre 771 with its 62-hour power reserve and 6 o’clock date, the new Aquis Chrono shows some thoughtful detailing, especially when it comes to its sub-dial integration.
Wild Blue Yonder
The three sub-dials for the 30-minute chrono counter, the 12-hour chrono tallier, and the small-seconds indicators (at the classic 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions) share the same stunning blue gradient as the dial surface.
However, despite being a sea of radiant blue, the dial is still easy to read thank to the sub-dials’ simple, uncluttered gauging and being recessed just enough to provide the perfect contrast. Moreover, the angular shield-shaped applied hour markers are highly polished, which only aids in the piece’s overall legibility.
A color-matched blue ceramic insert manages bottom time reminders on the unidirectional bezel, which has a textured edge for easier gloved operation. Meanwhile, on the caseback, an exhibition window shows the movement and its bold red rotor.
Even the steel three-link bracelet has received some subtle tapering work to amp this Aquis up beyond the dramatic addition of the chronograph function. Priced at CHF 4,400, the Oris Aquis Chronograph 43.5mm is available now.
The Heart of Oris
Of course, the Holstein-based watchmaker not only has one of the industry’s most legit sustainability messages, but Oris also frequently commits to charitable partnerships on many of its watch models; we’ve come to expect this from Oris.
Case-in-point: The new LFP Limited Edition was created in partnership with France’s Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) to benefit its charity partner, the country’s National Convention of Child Protection Associations (CNAPE).
This special Divers Sixty-Five model features the iconic Oris logo done in a hand-written script to evoke the innocence of a child’s writing. Set against an extremely deep blue dial, this script is used for all of the additional dial lettering, including the white “Swiss Made” badging and the crayon-colored “Water Resistant” writing.
Flip the watch over, and the script continues on the caseback’s engraving honoring the LFP’s Les Défenseurs de L’Enfance initiative.
Collaboration for a Good Cause
In addition to poignantly wearing your heart on your sleeve, you get a rock-solid 38mm steel tool watch powered by an Oris 733 movement, to boot: Expect a unidirectional bezel; lumed hour and minute hands, indices, and lollipop second hand; screw-in crown; 10 bar water resistance, and more.
“We’re so excited our partnership with the LFP is going up a league,” said Oris Co-CEO Rolf Studer. “We’re not interested in sticking logos on things; we want to make a real difference. And this powerful collaboration will bring real change. Our thanks to the LFP and CNAPE for embracing the Oris vision. Let’s achieve our goals together!”
Oris and LFP will be cohosting a series of fund-raising projects (including raffles around this watch) to benefit CNAPE. Limited to 1,000 pieces, the Divers Sixty-Five LFP Limited Edition retails for CHF 2,500 and is available as you read this.
