Fit for a King: Hublot Introduces the New Big Bang Unico Novak Djokovic

After being announced as an Hublot brand ambassador in 2021 and having worn several of the brand’s timepieces – particularly Big Bang novelties – both on and off the tennis court, it was about damn time The GOAT got an edition of his own.

How do you decide who is a “G.O.A.T.”? Twenty-four Grand Slam titles. Ninety-nine singles titles. Twenty-Four majors. Forty Masters. And an Olympic gold medal. That is only a fraction of what makes Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic the “greatest of all time.”

And while the player has worn a variety of watch brands over his twenty-plus-year professional career, it certainly seems Hublot fits his personality, style, and gravitas more than all the others. So, it was relatively inevitable that, after becoming an Hublot ambassador three years ago, the watch world would be introduced to a watch named after the tennis icon himself.

Lighting Up the City of Lights

Paris was the ideal backdrop for the introduction of the Big Bang Unico Novak Djokovic, considering it was in the “City of Light” earlier this year that Djokovic joined Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams as only the fifth tennis player in history to complete what is referred to as the “Golden Slam.”

Fun Fact: To complete the “Golden Slam” a player must have won all four Grand Slam singles titles – the Australian Open, the French Open (or, Roland Garros), Wimbledon, and the US Open – in the same year AND a gold medal in singles at the summer Olympic games.

Thus, it was in Paris that Djokovic joined Hublot CEO Julien Tornare, guests of the brand, and members of the watch and tennis media gathered for the unveiling of his namesake timepiece: the Big Bang Unico Novak Djokovic.

A Watch Fit for a King… or GOAT

With a look that could be described as “calming” due to its varying pale and slightly darker blue color combinations, if one did not know Djokovic personally, one might think the watch was designed in direct contrast to someone considered to be a beast on the tennis court. However, that assumption could not be further from the truth.

“To reach where I am today, it has required extensive work both physically and most importantly, mentally. The psychology of the game is very important, and when I play, each moment needs to be precise and intentional,” Djokovic said in a press release issued by the brand. “This is especially true with what I wear during preparation and competition, as it becomes part of my body, [and] my mind.”

Indeed, Novak Djokovic displays a mindfulness during matches, quite unlike the vast majority of his opponents. Maybe it’s his discipline, his experience, or even his maturity, but most likely, all three combined with a desire for excellence, helped turn the GOAT into a collected, professional, and practically unbeatable player.

“Every detail is critical to my ability to stay focused and determined. This new watch is an extension of this mindset and represents key moments from my 2023 season, a landmark year in my career,” the player’s statement continued. “It is a symbol of every game, every moment. It has been an incredible experience to collaborate with Hublot to create this special watch.”

A Limited Edition for an Unlimited Career

Limited to 100 pieces, what is unique about the Hublot Big Bang Unico Novak Djokovic piece is its lightness.

The brand developed a composite material of twenty-five HEAD tennis rackets and seventeen dark blue and fifteen light blue Lacoste polos used by “Nole” (the endearing nickname given to the player by his fans) during his 2023 season. The materials used allowed the watch to be as light as possible while still being tough and resilient to damage.

Meanwhile, the watch’s case and bezel are crafted in an epoxy resin reinforced with quartz powder and glass. This mixture is then fused with the previously mentioned parts of rackets and polo shirts. The result is a watch that is an array of almost camouflage-like pale and dark blue textiles and black carbon.

Plus, for the sake of lightness, Hublot opted to use tempered “Gorilla” glass (which is mainly used in high-end electronics) rather than installing the standard sapphire crystal.

This limited edition is equipped with a 354-component Unico chronograph movement that has been reworked to contain aluminum parts instead of the much heavier brass parts the movement usually has. As a result, the Big Bang Unico Novak Djokovic weighs less than a tennis ball!
