All About The Beach: Hublot Turns Up The Heat With The Big Bang Unico 45 Sky Blue

Summer is about escape. Sitting poolside and disappearing into a pulpy book, a hot BBQ full of delicious food, or just hiding in a hammock, staring up at the clouds. And now, thanks to Hublot, you can also run away (virtually) to a Saint-Tropez beach with the new Big Bang Unico 45 Sky Blue.
Yes, the blue hues of this cool new watch were designed to evoke the world’s most luxurious summertime travel destinations like the seaside paradises of Mykonos, Ibiza, and the Côte d’Azur. And though it’s big (45mm) and colorful (coated in blue ceramic), like a linen suit and a chambray shirt, this timepiece is a go-with-anything-anywhere watch.
Sea And Sky
Hublot has been raising the bar with ceramics over the few years. The material is fussy to work with, especially when you add color to the mix. But when you get the combination right, it’s worth celebrating.
In the case of the Big Bang Unico 45 Sky Blue, the unique fusion of the baby blue ceramic case and white accents are meant to evoke both the blue of the ocean and the clouds in the sky.
The result is a timepiece that offers a sense of simplicity as well as old-world elegance. But the very modern materials used – the hard-wearing ceramic case and the easy Velcro fabric strap fastened by a sky-blue ceramic deployant buckle clasp – make this watch feel light and carefree on the wrist.
As easy-breezy as it first appears, this horizon-expanding take on the Big Bang Unico 45 also offers a lot of depth. The sky-blue, sloping outer track and skeletonized dial let you dive deep into the watch’s inner workings. Satin-finished, rhodium-plated, and white lumed numbers, indices, and hands provide a nice contrast against the components of the caliber.
It’s the juxtaposition of white and blue and polished and satin-finished surfaces that impresses. Again, the degree of technical proficiency to achieve this kind of finish cannot be understated. And, in person, the effect is enchanting.
Even if you find yourself landlocked this summer, it’s easy to imagine standing on the deck of a yacht and staring out at the Mediterranean while wearing the Big Bang Unico 45 Sky Blue.

Summer is all about going with the flow. And this Big Bang Unico 45 is very versatile. You can also pair it with a sky-blue and white rubber strap with a titanium deployant buckle clasp if you want to freshen up your look between apéritif and digestif.
But even on vacation, you still have to know what time it is. That is why it’s reassuring to know that this watch runs on an MHUB1242 UNICO Manufacture Self-winding column wheel flyback chronograph movement. It may look laid back, but this caliber has a lot of energy. It beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800 A/h) and has a power reserve of 72 hours. Its water-resistance of 10 ATM (100m) makes it very beach ready as well.
Just like the season, the Big Bang Sky Blue is not endless. Limited to 100 pieces, each sky-blue polished caseback is engraved with “LIMITED EDITION” and the watch’s number. Available now, the Hublot Big Bang Unico 45 Sky Blue is priced at $21,500.
