24 Hours Later: OMEGA Unveils a New Seamaster Diver 300M Series
Teased during the Summer Olympics, these mixed metal editions are definitely medal-worthy additions to OMEGA's catalog.
We JUST heard about OMEGA’s expanded Seamaster Diver 300M series.
That said, we’ve known about it since the summer when brand ambassador Daniel Craig was spotted wearing an unreleased black, no-date Seamaster 300M on a mesh strap.
Enthusiasts have had months to strain their eyes examining blown-up Instagram images and speculate about OMEGA’s strategy. Yet, even with so much advance notice, once the collection was officially announced on the 21st, we needed time to process its small but significant changes.
Mixed Metals
According to Omega, the collection is inspired by the Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition, which was worn in the James Bond film No Time to Die (2021). But more importantly, the new Diver 300M series moves away from the minimalist ceramic-cased models of recent years.
For now, the new Seamaster Diver 300M series consists of two 42mm stainless steel models: one with a black aluminum bezel and black aluminum dial featuring laser-engraved waves (this is closest to the model Craig teased in Paris), the other with a grade 5 titanium bezel and a brushed PVD stainless steel dial.
Bringing Sexy Back
What wasn’t apparent from examining pictures of the unreleased Seamaster on social media is the amount of detail OMEGA designers have packed into a 42mm canvas.
The brand describes this Seamaster Diver 300M as having a vintage aesthetic. And yes, touches like the domed sapphire crystal and mesh bracelet certainly suggest it is of a bygone era of sports watches. However, it could also be argued that its look is less retro and more dashing, adventurous, and downright sexy.
We’re also grateful to see a dive watch without a date window. Removing this element frees up the display for more fun and functional treats like the skeletonized hour and minute hands and the lollipop second hand that gives a kinetic kick to the circular indices.
Moreover, for those who hate the trend of patinated Super-LumiNova to create a faux vintage look, you will be happy to learn that these hand markers glow brightly in both blue and green.
Another neat visual trick is the many surface textures – especially on the version with the pebbled bezel and brushed dial – make the watches look lighter than their ceramic counterparts. This effect is best executed in combination with the mesh bracelet. The light flows over the watch while it wraps around the wrist. And fluidity is something you want in a diver.
Breaking the Waves
Performance is another thing you want in a dive watch. Thus, in keeping with Omega’s standards for precision, performance, and magnetic resistance, the new Seamaster Diver 300Ms are powered by the classic Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8806, which can be viewed through the sapphire crystal on the caseback.
While the look and materials are novel, there is also something to be said for the Seamaster’s consistency. For example, since 1993, the Seamaster Diver 300M has been one of OMEGA’s most easily identifiable (and popular) dive watches thanks to signatures such as the helium escape valve at 10 o’clock. This latest series merely gives enthusiasts more options.
Of course, we still have the versatility of the ceramic versions, and we still enjoy the luxury of Seamasters in Sedna Gold; however, these latest additions to the family provide something for enthusiasts who seek something a little more rakish.
Pricing & Avialability
The new Seamaster Diver 300M series is available now. The mesh bracelet model retails for $6,500. Meanwhile, the rubber strapped version is $5,900. For more information, check out OMEGA’s website.
