Oh, The Places You Will Go with The Laurent Ferrier Classic Traveller Globe Night Blue
The haute horology house celebrates its 15th anniversary by updating its signature travel watch.
Since its first watch debuted in 2010, Laurent Ferrier has always been considered a bit of a time traveler. Founder Ferrier is a third-generation watchmaker, and it shows in his reverence for fine finishes. He also spent 30 years at Patek Phillipe, where he worked on the prototype of the Gérald Genta-designed Nautilus. At 63, he embraced the future of horology and set up his eponymous shop.
One of the most emblematic examples of how Laurent Ferrier finds the balance between tradition and ambition is the Galet Traveller Globe, introduced in 2016, with a dynamic enamel dial depicting a map of the world.
More importantly, this watch also featured a remarkably intuitive dual-time function, which employed twin buttons on the left side of the case to advance the second time zone forward or backward in hourly increments.
Thus, as the brand marked its 15th anniversary in February, Laurent Ferrier decided to celebrate by upgrading this signature piece. Meet the Classic Traveller Globe Night Blue.
Big Blue Marble
Laurent Ferrier was ahead of its time when it released the first Galet Traveller Globe, a dual time zone timepiece, in 2016. This original edition was distinguished by an engraved white gold dial featuring translucent blue enamel oceans and continents decorated with gold glitter. The 2016 watch also anticipated the current shift toward more formal watches. Galet is French for pebble, and the architecture of the case of this watch provides a smooth, almost talismanic energy – like keeping a stone in your pocket for luck.
For 2025, the Maison has preserved the case shape of the Galet but dialed down on its miniature map. The engraving has been replaced with a champlevé enamel technique. The center of the dial is now decorated with a convex planisphere depicting the five continents in white gold, covered with blue enamel, and surrounded by a sea rendered in deep blue enamel.
For an added degree of difficulty, the world’s great cities are represented by almost microscopic, hand-painted dots depicting light as seen from space at night. It is visually restrained and feels more in line with Laurent Ferrier’s refined aesthetic than in previous iterations of the globe.
Other elegant touches include a slate grey outer ring and drop-shaped indices that enhance the 3-D effect of the dial. It creates the calming sensation of floating weightless in space. Finally, a deep grey Nubuck leather strap with an Alcantara lining 18k white gold pin buckle complements the look.
Rare Earth
For all its artistry, the Classic Traveller Globe Night Blue is meant to be a practical watch for the world traveler. The 18k white gold case measures in at an easy-to-wear diameter of 41mm with a thickness of 12.64mm.
On the left side of the case are two oblong integrated pushers that allow the local time, displayed by the central hour hand, to be easily adjusted. When crossing time zones, this hand can be advanced forward (upper pusher) or moved backward (lower pusher) in one-hour increments without altering the position of the minute hand.
For enhanced legibility, the date displayed in the aperture at 3 o’clock automatically leaps forward at midnight, adjusting to different time zones without further intervention. The window at 9 o’clock denotes home time using a 24-hour display so that you always know if it's day or night.
The Classic Traveller is powered by the LF 230.02 automatic calibre with a unidirectional pawl-fitted micro-rotor, enhanced by a double direct-impulse natural escapement. This escapement delivers two direct impulses to the balance with each oscillation to provide an impressive 72-hour power reserve.
Because it is Laurent Ferrier, this movement is meticulously decorated with rhodium-plated Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges and circular graining on the main plate. The mechanism also features hand-beveled edges and hand-polished screw heads. All this artistry can be admired through a sapphire caseback.
