The New Panerai Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica is Stealthy, Sleek, and Ultra-Lightweight
At the annual Miami Design Week, Panerai unveiled the latest bold design for its iconic Luminor with GMT functionality.
Last week, Miami was the place to see and be seen as the city’s legendary Design Week took center stage, and art and design lovers from around the globe flocked to the Magic City for world-class art fairs, public activations, city-wide art installations, museum exhibitions, parties, and more.
While timepieces certainly aren’t the star of the show at the annual event, the art of watchmaking is one of many subsets of the design community that plays a small but significant supporting role. That is why, every year, a few select brands take the opportunity to unveil some of their latest horological works of art.
This year, Panerai seized the opportunity to introduce the new Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica PAM01674.
The Iconic Luminor: A Brief History
The Luminor is one of Panerai’s flagship models. Its origins trace back to the beginning of the 20th century when the brand became an official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy.
Through this fruitful partnership, Panerai first developed the Radiomir, which featured a patented, luminous, radium-based powder. However, once radium’s harmful effects were understood, Panerai introduced a new luminous material aptly named Luminor, which gave way to a new collection of the same name.
Since its debut in 1949, the brand has iterated on the design of the Luminor countless times. In the past 75 years, we’ve seen futuristic versions that embrace new materials like the brand’s patented Carbotech to more classic chronograph variations to sustainably focused takes on the beloved model like the Luminor Marina eSteel that uses a recycled-based steel alloy.
Now, we get a design-forward, all-black version of the icon.
Bold and Blacked-Out
With the new Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica PAM01674, Panerai presents a sleek, monochromatic, and minimalist ceramic execution that fully embodies the brand’s dedication to the concept of functional design.
The all-black aesthetic extends to every element of the watch from the dial to the case and bracelet, but, of course, legibility remains a top priority with the hands, indices, date window, and registers each getting a healthy treatment of grey Super-LumiNova X1.
In typical Panerai fashion, this bold watch boasts an oversized 44mm case; however, this time, it’s rendered in lightweight ceramic, which also extends to the bracelet.
The ceramic used in this particular model is based on high-tech Zirconium Oxide powder (ZrO2), which has to undergo a complex process of injection molding, followed by shaping with diamond wheels, and finally, sandblasting to achieve a mono-material and muted monotone look.
Powering the all-new Luminor GMT Power Reserve Ceramica PAM01674 is the automatic P.9012 calibre with a power reserve of three days. As the name of the model suggests, the movement offers central hour, GMT, and minute hands, as well as a small seconds dial at nine o’clock, a power reserve indicator at five o’clock, and a date window at three o’clock.
