A Closer Look at Seiko’s New Presage “Silver Bullet” GMT for the Cocktail Time Collection
This accessible dress watch has luxury looks with a price tag of under $1,000.
After years of red-carpet watch-spotting, it’s become clear that wearing sport watches to formal events is now socially acceptable. Luke Evans, for example, wore a Hublot Big Bang Unico to the 2026 Met Gala. Granted, it was studded with 334 diamonds, but it is still, by function, a sports watch with a flyback chronograph.
On the other end of the spectrum, formal watches – traditionally defined as timepieces with minimal complications – are getting dressed down. So, now, you are just as likely to see a Patek Philippe Calatrava (which is likely to cost between $27,000 and $47,000) poking out from under the sleeve of somebody’s Carhartt jacket (priced between $130 and $320) as you are in a boardroom or formal event.
Of course, while many collectors associate ultimate elegance with the big five maisons of Patek, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, and Grand Seiko, there are still plenty of elegant timepieces that are dressed to impress both in the ballroom and a Brooklyn Coffee Shop.
Seiko’s latest addition to its Cocktail Time collection, the Presage “Silver Bullet” GMT (SSK049), is one of them.
Shot Class
Just a refresher, Seiko’s Cocktail Time collection features Presage watches inspired by mixed drinks from Japan’s high-end cocktail bars. Thus, the namesake of this new Presage, the Silver Bullet, is a cocktail that blends gin, Kummel, and lemon juice, served in the famous Star Bar in Tokyo’s Ginza district.
The Presage prides itself on colorful artisanal dials, but the collection also boasts in-house movements and high-end finishing. Combine that with price tags that rarely exceed $1,000, and the Cocktail Time collection becomes an absolutely intoxicating option for those looking for an accessibly priced but upscale watch.
We’re not going to lie, the patterned dial and bold colors of previous versions of the Cocktail Time may have read as too flashy for some tastes. But the new Presage “Silver Bullet” GMT breaks with other models in the collection in two substantial ways.
First, the Cocktail Time signature radial dial pattern, which is meant to evoke cut glass in the light, is still present, but this time it’s been pressed into a silver base. So not only is it more economically accessible, but it also has broader visual appeal.
The second evolution is the addition of a GMT function. The layout uses a 24-hour scale in deep blue that’s integrated with the main hour markers rather than stacked on a separate ring or chapter. Meanwhile, the GMT hand – shaped to echo a cocktail glass stem – is also tinted blue.
A gold central seconds hand adds a warm contrast to the cooler hues of the dial and display. A fluted crown echoes the radiant texture of the dial, while lending the watch an elegant vintage cachet. And because dial is more minimalist, it is easy to read.
Happy Hour
Aesthetically, the Silver Bullet leans into a sort of quiet luxury, laissez-faire mood. That is why it’s not too troubling to note that it is not a true traveler’s GMT but rather a “caller.” This means that the local hour hand doesn’t jump independently. Again, not a deal-breaker if you are not relying on the function to fly a plane or to schedule meetings for an international conglomerate.
To add to the laid-back but elegant vibe, the Silver Bullet’s 40.5mm stainless steel case measures in at 12.8mm thick, with polished surfaces, gently curved lugs, and a slightly flared crown. That means it will sit effortlessly (and comfortably) on the wrist while still providing a chic wrist presence.
Finally, the new Silver Bullet is powered by Seiko’s automatic Caliber 4R34, with a power reserve of roughly 41 hours. Not exactly weekend-proof, but whether you are wearing it to a gala or a more casual fin de semaine brunch, you’ll probably be keeping it charged just by wearing it.
