A Closer Look At The New Ulysse Nardin Freak X Razzle Dazzle

Disruption is a buzzword of late, and Ulysse Nardin has fully embraced the concept with its new Freak X Razzle Dazzle. Incorporating all the legendary Freak collection’s mechanical hallmarks, the new model features a dial embellished with dazzle camouflage on both the index ring and movement plate. And like the other Freak models, the new watch features a flying carousel movement, the UN-230 self-winding movement, which has a 72-hour power reserve.  

The Freak X Razzle Dazzle’s design is steeped in maritime significance, fitting for the brand that was a pioneer in highly accurate marine chronometers. According to the brand, “The usual purpose of camouflage is to blend in or to conceal, but in this case, the pattern actually draws attention to itself.” That’s certainly true with this timepiece and its razzle dazzle aesthetic, which is truly mesmerizing to watch. 
 

Razzle dazzle painting, also called dazzle camouflage, was used by the British in World War I and World War II to confuse enemy ships by being intentionally disruptive. Specifically, its avant-garde, chevron-like pattern made it difficult to estimate the razzle dazzled ship's range, speed, and direction.
 

The new Freak X Razzle Dazzle is certain to provide a welcome diversion from the monotony of endless Zoom meetings that are ubiquitous in the business world. As Ulysse Nardin said in its press release, “[The] new black and white pattern will hypnotize you.” And I would be happy to take the brand up on its offer if it means escaping the Zoom doldrums.
 

The Razzle Dazzle’s 43mm case is crafted of black DLC (diamond-like carbon) coated titanium that is sandblasted and satin-finished. The brand combined electroplating, galvanic treatment, and laser techniques to create the watch’s dial design. Moreover, the UN-230 movement is visible in all its glory via the watch’s sapphire crystal caseback. The watch is available on a leather and rubber openwork strap in either black or white.
 

Whatever reason collectors have for purchasing this timepiece – whether for its unique dial design, technical mastery, or nautical inspiration – time is of the essence; the Freak X Razzle Dazzle is limited to only 30 individually numbered pieces. And at a price of $27,300, they won’t last long.
