Hublot and Jeff Koons Unveil a New Vision of Cosmic Creation with the MP-14 Origin

Some collaborations simply bring two names together. Others create a language of their own. With the MP-14 Origin, Jeff Koons and Hublot have done precisely that, transforming the wristwatch into a miniature vision of cosmic creation bourne out the mind of Mr Koons himself.

Unveiled in New York, the limited-edition timepiece brings together high watchmaking, high jewellery and contemporary art in one arresting object. Sapphire, titanium and gem-setwhitegold form an architecture inspired by the universe at the moment of its birth, while Hublot’s first automatic central tourbillon provides its mechanical first pulse.

Just 30 pieces will be made, placing the MP-14 Origin firmly within Hublot’s Exceptional Timepieces collection, where the Manufacture pushes the boundaries of conventional watchmaking.

A Universe Begins at the Centre

The idea is wonderfully ambitious: to make the birth of the universe mechanical.

At the centre of the composition, a tourbillon appears to float beneath a transparent sapphire dome. Concentric rings radiate around it, creating an illusion of matter expanding from a single point of energy. The dome draws on Koons’s Gazing Ball works and is finished with a translucent blue varnish, giving the entire construction an almost otherworldly glow.

Here, the tourbillon is more than a complication. It becomes the origin point—the first pulse from which the rest of the universe unfolds.

Sapphire as Architecture

At 44 mm, the MP-14 Origin is impossible to mistake for an ordinary watch. Its octagonal case, crafted from transparent sapphire and titanium, turns the material usually used to protect the movement into the very architecture of the piece.

Creating it requires approximately 534 hours of machining. Inside, rotating rings, precious stones and mechanical elements appear suspended in space. Two rotating rings indicate the hours and minutes through floating cubes, while fixed rings set with baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires heighten the celestial effect.

In total, 202 stones (approximately 2.3 carats) are scattered across the structure like fragments of a distant galaxy.

The First Pulse: Hublot’s Central Tourbillon

Behind the spectacle is a significant technical achievement for Hublot: the Manufacture’s first automatic central tourbillon.

The HUB9014 movement comprises 594 components, operates at 3 Hz and delivers a 60-hour power reserve. Its peripheral oscillating weight eliminates the need for a conventional central rotor, leaving the centre of the movement open and allowing the tourbillon to appear suspended.

It is a rare instance in which engineering and aesthetics seem to speak the same language. The technical architecture does not compete with Koons’s vision; it completes it.

Time in Orbit

Even telling the time becomes part of the performance.

Hours and minutes travel around the watch on two suspended rotating rings, each carrying its own indicator cube. There are no traditional hands settling onto a conventional dial. Instead, the indications seem to orbit through transparent space, constantly shifting as the watch catches the light.

Sapphire refracts it. Diamonds amplify it. The rotating architecture gives it movement.

The result is a timepiece that does more than measure time; it makes time visible.

From Wristwatch to Installation

Transformation is the common language shared by Koons and Hublot. Koons has spent decades elevating the familiar into the iconic, while Hublot’s “Art of Fusion” has made unexpected combinations of materials, techniques and disciplines part of its identity.

With the MP-14 Origin, those philosophies converge. Sapphire becomes architecture, diamonds become stars, and the tourbillon becomes the pulse of creation.
