Chopard Celebrates Its Happy Diamonds 50th Birthday with Heritage Models That Shine On

If visions of dancing diamonds are playing in your head, the revived anniversary heritage models, revealed today by Chopard, will likely make all those shiny dreams come true.

You’d be forgiven if your current impression of Chopard’s iconic Happy Diamonds creations is of a decidedly (but not exclusively) feminine timepiece. However, when the concept of freeing diamonds from the traditional idea of permanent, static settings and allowing them to dance across the dial was introduced in 1976, the Happy Diamonds timepiece was more of an equal-opportunity player, in a kind of ostentatious, luxurious, mid-century, international jet-set sense.

Today, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Happy Diamonds concept, the maison honors that original air of easy-but-unmistakable sophistication in two, brought-back-for-the-first-time Happy Diamond Heritage re-editions (in both 34 and 24mm executions).

Moreover, the brand also decided to take the Happy Diamonds concept back to the future with new, faithfully vintage editions for the Happy Sport, dubbed Happy Sport The First (in both 33 and 26mm sizes), and enlisted models Bella Hadid and Liu Wen to spearhead its celebrity campaign. Of course, some joyfully aligned Chopard jewelry is a big part of this birthday party, as well.

Needless to say, all the new offerings make splendid use of the original’s innovation of free-flowing individual diamonds that playfully spin on-axis all around the watch face in an almost magical way as they are sandwiched between the top crystal and dial plate itself.

The Historical Spin

Even the 1976 originals were envisioned in two sizes, with elegant cushion-shaped cases and sleek black dials…and that might just have been enough to qualify them as truly elegant timepieces. But dancing diamonds? I mean, come on.

Take this for what it’s worth, but my first thought upon seeing the 34mm Happy Diamonds Heritage re-edition was an image of actor George Hamilton, or a similarly suave leading man, who was rarely seen outside a dinner jacket during that era. That is because, for both the 24mm and 34mm Happy Diamond Heritage re-editions, Chopard has tapped the original’s evening elan by using velvety black onyx dials that set a polished, grand piano-like stage for the crystal choreography.

The two-hand 34mm model is wrought in 18-karat ethical yellow gold for its case, onyx-cabochon crown, hands, and inner dial boundary, and features the footwork of 21 Happy Diamond elements. Meanwhile, its manufacture hand-wound movement, first introduced in 2024, offers 45 hours of power reserve.

Only 2.9mm thick, the Chopard 10.01-C is one of the world’s thinnest mechanical movements. Fortunately, you can view the diminutive movement through a black-framed exhibition caseback.

In the two-handed, 24mm model, thinness and delicacy are achieved via a quartz movement, and the diamond dance troupe is a more intimate count of 9 Happy Diamond elements that joyfully move around the dial.

An elegant black alligator strap holds all the kinetic motion firmly to your wrist for both models.

Family Jewels

In the watch world, the Scheufele family carries a particularly deep sense of hands-on involvement, inspiration, and direction for its creations. In fact, 9 years after the original Happy Diamonds timepieces debuted, a young Caroline Scheufele (now Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director) sketched the “Happy Clown,” a piece of jewelry that brought the spinning stones into neckline adornment and became an unexpected icon for the brand.

The Happy Clown was born from my imagination, as a spontaneous drawing filled with joy and fantasy. I never expected it to become a piece of jewellery. My father had it created in secret as a surprise, and it marked the beginning of Chopard’s journey into jewellery. It carries a sense of emotion and freedom that continues to inspire us today.

Right in step with the concept’s celebration, two new executions of her Happy Clown pendant also debut with the Happy Diamonds Heritage timepieces: One, a whimsical 18-karat yellow gold pendant with a mix of spinning diamonds, ruby, sapphire, and emerald gemstones in the clown’s belly, and an all-diamond pavé version, as well.

The collection also debuted a “Happy Diamonds” aligned yellow gold tie pin/brooch, cufflinks, pendant, and ring for the anniversary.

The Sporting Life

The happy story continued with Caroline Scheufele’s creation of the Happy Sport timepieces in 1993 as a sportier, more modern take on the concept’s spinning spontaneity.

…[I]t was a bold gesture, almost provocative, combining steel and diamonds went against all conventions. But I wanted a watch that could accompany me at every moment of the day: sporty, feminine, and joyful, one that could be worn just as easily with jeans as with a cocktail dress. I am very excited to bring this original design back today, in the form of a creation that is subtle, fresh and contemporary.

In 26mm, these Happy Sport The First models express themselves in an ethical yellow gold version, Chopard’s proprietary Lucent Steel (one with a diamond-set bezel), and a bi-color combination of both, with the 33mm executions in Lucent Steel, Lucent Steel with a diamond-set bezel, and a bi-color take, as well.

Regardless of your preferred case size, the expertly redesigned, tell-tale pebble-link bracelet of the Happy Sport has been scaled to match each case size, anchoring the revival. Meanwhile, the dial’s classic midnight blue Roman indices, railway minute track, and blued sword-shaped hands bring the perfect amount of vintage charm to these anniversary pieces.

Of course, expect five Happy Diamond dancers in the 26mm model and seven for the 33mm versions. Both are quartz-based timepieces.

Finally, a thoughtful line of rectangular Happy Diamonds pendants joins this release, ranging in setting approaches and materials, with three “dancing diamonds” as well as a high-jewelry pendant in ethical white gold set with trapeze and emerald-cut diamonds, with 7 prima ballerinas taking center stage.
