The New TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Sport 42mm Pulls Onto the Track

With the Madrid F1 Grand Prix set to run this coming weekend, F1 official timekeeper and race title partner TAG Heuer unveils a new chronograph family that is an inspired, authentic return of a brand pillar as much as it is a fully modern expression of track-ready wrist chronography.

In 2020, TAG Heuer added the Carrera Chronograph Sport 44mm to the esteemed lineage of the Carrera timepiece; a story that started in 1963 when Jack Heuer developed a wrist chronograph purpose-built for professional race drivers.

However, the Carrera Chronograph Sport, in this new release of five variations, is the result of a design process that essentially revisited every element of the original’s execution – design, proportion, functional detail – to refresh the model with greater precision, more wrist comfort, and an even stronger visual appeal while still maintaining deep roots in the watchmaker’s unmatched timing and racing heritage.

Let’s take a look.

Making a Case

The evolution story starts with a newly designed, newly sized stainless steel case. Reduced to 42mm (from the original’s 44mm), the TAG design team has also paired this more compact case size with reduced lug-to-lug measurements (49.8mm to 48.6mm) for pay-offs in ergonomics and wrist comfort, as well as a thinner profile (14.7mm).

Brush-finishing on the case sides also enhances eye-appeal, delivering an updated style story without detracting from the timepiece’s inherently technical intent. Meanwhile, a sculpted chrono pusher design for the triggers at 2 and 4 o’clock creates a strong visual tie to engine pistons. It’s a subtle but thoughtful detail for fans of automotive mechanics.

A rethought, thinner bezel comprising a steel cradle and polished ceramic insert is shared by the new models to further enhance the message behind these new pieces: balancing elegance and sport, everyday wear and a racing edge.

To the last point, another small, racing-related detail appears on these new Sports’ cases in the form of a “Victory Wreath” engraved on the underside of the watches’ upper-right lugs – a very nice IYKYK embellishment.

At the Wheel

The dial approaches of the new models also received some shared-heritage-intention-meets-refined-detail-revisiting. Speedometer-inspired, double-digit Arabic numerals replace the original Sport’s bar indices to hew more closely to Jack Heuer’s foundational intent of instant legibility and to create an immediate association with dashboard gauges. Take a look: The chapter ring runs from “05” for 1 o’clock to “60” for noon/midnight.

A re-angled outer flange and an easy-to-read tri-compax sub-dial layout solve the challenge of retaining the same clarity imperative with less dial real estate. The usual suspects of a 30-minute tallier at 3 o’clock, subsidiary small seconds (with an integrated date window) at 6 o’clock, and 12-hour totalizer at 9 o’clock remain true to racing chrono heritage and tradition.

Under the Hood, At the Curb

Visible through the caseback, the 80-hour power reserve Calibre TH20-00 automatic movement with a TAG Heuer shield-shaped rotor, first introduced in 2023 and seen in multiple modern Carrera “glass box” executions, serves as the power plant for these novelties, bringing every bit of its legendary reliability, 4Hz accuracy, and column wheel/vertical clutch chronograph precision to the family.

Meanwhile, a newly designed, now-tapered H-link steel bracelet brings a full tank of curb appeal to the watches. A new link-change approach featuring outer-link pull-out components lets you adjust the bracelet’s sizing at home and, refreshingly, qualifies as truly “easy.”

Putting all these value-adding details aside, the new Carrera Chronograph Sport 42mm models really hum in their apt colorways and dial design options.

The Livery Lineup

With an all-black canvas of opaline dial, snailed sub-dials, and polished ceramic bezel insert, the Ref. CDB2110.BA0054 presents a sense of stealthy technical menace. Add in the reference’s bold red sweep seconds and 3 and 9 o’clock sub-dial hands, and you might come down with your own case of red-line fever.

The expected dark blue so closely associated with the TAG Heuer Carrera appears in Ref. CBD2111.BA0054’s circular-brushed dial and ceramic bezel insert, but this time, a contrasting silver azuré is used for the sub-dial surfaces, and more rhodium/metallic details are used overall to substitute its black sibling’s aggressive stance with classic elegance and style.

Put that cool blueness on a brown calf leather perforated strap, and you’ll know what you need to know about the Ref. CDB2111.FC8378 as a member of the new Sport family.

The Ref. CDB2112.BA0054 pairs a verdant green sunray-brushed dial with a matching green bezel insert for some forest-y fun, while also picking up the blue model’s contrasting silver-toned sub-dials and metallic detailing.
