Why Cartier ‘Into the Wild’ Collection Is the Season’s Most Ferocious Fine Jewellery

The question Cartier’s new Into the Wild collection keeps asking, implicitly, is this: how close can you get? Not metaphorically, but anatomically.

Cartier has built its latest Fine Jewellery collection around a single, uncompromising idea: that the animal form is the most demanding test of a jeweller’s skill, and that no other house has passed it as consistently for as long. Into the Wild is, in that sense, less a collection than an audit – of the Maison’s own capacities, conducted in platinum, white gold, onyx, emerald and approximately every shade of sapphire known to the trade.

What Is Actually Being Made

The collection divides into two main bodies of work. The first, Faune & Flore de Cartier, presents five animal-head rings – tiger, parrot, carp, crocodile, rhinoceros – each demanding a distinct set of techniques.

The crocodile’s jaw articulates. Its interior alternates white and rose gold to suggest the striated palate. The rhinoceros horn is carved from opalescent smoky quartz by the lapidary, edged in black lacquer. The tiger wears a galuchat-effect paving of white diamonds and sapphires intended to evoke ice.

These are not stylistic choices; they are technical ones, each made to close the distance between the jewellery and the animal it represents.

Bracelets and necklaces in crocodile and tiger extend the logic further: naturalistic heads on bodies that become abstract, fully articulated structures – waves of inverted-set diamonds punctuated with onyx, chrysoprase, rubellite.

The engineering required to hide a functioning clasp inside an animal’s mouth without breaking the line of the bracelet represents, quietly, months of atelier development.

The Panthère

The emblematic Panther anchors the collection, as she has anchored the Maison since 1948. Here, a tête-à-tête bracelet covers her entirely in diamonds – alternating galuchat and caviar pavings of different scales, creating a surface that shifts under light.

A jewellery watch, produced at Cartier’s Maison des Métiers d’Art in La Chaux-de-Fonds, calls on three métiers simultaneously: designer, gem-setter, lacquerer. The dial is less a dial than a cameo.

The Point

Pierre Rainero, Cartier’s Director of Image, Style and Heritage, frames it plainly: “Each creature reveals its own symbolic force.” What Into the Wild argues, piece by piece, is that symbolic force and technical force are the same thing – and that one without the other is merely decoration.
