Ever since watch industry juggernaut Jean-Claude Biver (and his son Pierre) made a stunning debut in 2023 of the exclusive Biver watch brand, speculation has run rampant about who, if anyone, might be brought in to manage the day-to-day operation of the fledgling brand.

Finally, after much anticipation, it was announced earlier today that auction house veteran James Marks is the newly minted Chief Executive Officer at Biver.

“I am deeply honored to be part of this esteemed venture and to collaborate with both Bivers in safeguarding their legacy,” Marks said in a release about the announcement. “Together, we will uphold our commitment to high-watchmaking and luxury while charting new territories.”

This news offers a bit of insight into where the brand now stands in its growth timeline. However, it also gives us some clues into what this new phase of Biver could bring for wristwatch aficionados because in the same announcement, an “upcoming launch that will solidify the Maison’s vision and future plans” was mentioned.

A launch Marks will no doubt be deeply involved with.

Marks, who has served in a consulting position for Phillips Auction House (officially as Deputy Chairman of Watches and International Head of Phillips Perpetual) for the past six years, will retain that position. And it is anticipated that his role in the luxury watch industry, coupled with his experience, will dovetail with the renowned father-and-son brand founders and add a fresh perspective to the operation.

Plus, Marks has been a long-standing Biver family associate, so, presumably, a rapport of some sort has already been established.

In his role at Phillips, Marks led innovation in both brick-and-mortar and e-commerce ventures for the watch department, setting several world-record final hammers along the way. Marks also has a background in investment banking and portfolio management.

“We are delighted to welcome James Marks to the Biver family,” expressed Jean-Claude Biver in the same announcement. “James’ dynamic leadership and profound grasp of our vision will propel us forward. His partnership with Pierre will ensure a smooth, long-term, generational transition.”
