The World is Yours With The Frederique Constant Worldtimer

The Worldtimer is a travel-ready watch with an in-house movement that still leaves enough money in the bank for plane tickets.

Frederique Constant has long been heralded for their philosophy of accessible luxury. In a world of ballooning price tags, there’s an increasing need for reasonably-priced and well-crafted timepieces that don’t require collectors (especially early-stage enthusiasts) to take out a loan. The Frederique Constant Worldtimer - a welcome response to the market trend - is a handsome watch with an in-house movement, a useful complication, and it’s priced under $5,000 with some cash to spare.

Wearing The World On Your Wrist

At 42mm wide and 12mm thick, the worldtimer offers considerable wrist presence, and the three-part case lends a healthy, but not overbearing, weight to the wrist. The pristinely polished case feels sturdy, and the fuller proportions nicely balance the visual elegance of the design. The short and curved lugs keep the watch grounded and echo the sloping, shiny bezel. After sitting with this watch for a while, one feels a bit like the Greek myth Atlas, carrying the whole world but without the struggle.

The details on this watch are key, and there are a lot of them. The main challenge for this or any worldtimer is to provide ample information without feeling too busy. Here, Frederique Constant balances the wealth of information on the dial with punchy details like applied hour markers and bold hands. The alpha hands on the majority of models bring enough angularity to read at a glance, and the silver dial version is equipped with spade and leaf-shaped hour and minute hands respectively for even greater impact.

The FC Woldtimer is available in a range of handsome case and dial options. The most widely seen version is the silver dial on a navy strap, a welcome reversal of the blue dial and steel bracelet formula. FC also offers rich palettes with matching dial and strap options in brown, navy, dark grey, and even green. The color selection is both expansive and focused, covering a range of masculine neutrals and adding a pop of green for good measure. This is certainly more choice than we’re used to seeing from watch brands and it fits given the global appeal of this watch.

Form And Function For Frederique Constant

Frederique Constant has been making a large portion of their movements in-house since 2001, and each year, that portion grows a little larger. They now produce 25 different in-house calibers at their workshops in Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland for sale in their Manufacture collection. One notable inclusion in this collection is their 2019 Baselworld release, the Classic Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Manufacture, which at just over $22,000, offers an immense bang-for-the-buck in the world of high complication horology.

The Worldtimer makes use of the in-house FC-718 movement which controls hours, minutes, seconds, the date, and the worldtimer feature with the 2-0-Rings crown, so there are no extra pushers to interrupt the case silhouette. Turn the watch over and you’ll see the perlage-adorned mainplate, rose gold rotor, and centered escapement peaking out through the sapphire caseback.

I Can Show You The World

GMT watches get all the attention these days, which only creates a rising value proposition for their overachieving brothers, worldtimers. After all, worldtimers, are like GMTs but 10x more useful, or in this case, 24x more useful as the FC version tracks the time in two dozen cities around the world. And where GMTs routinely fall into the sports watch camp, the Worldtimer is a stately watch that’s well-suited for business travel types.

While airports today are teeming with the beleaguered and sweatpants-clad, there’s always that one well-dressed gent in a sports coat standing out form the crowd. He’s the guy single-handedly reviving the glamor of travel and he’s the guy that this watch is for. Ready at a moment’s notice and always put together, the Frederique Constant is a choice companion for wherever the winds may take you.

The Frederique Constant Worldtimer starts at $3,995 USD. The watch is available on Frederique Constant's website or at your nearest Frederique Constant retailer.
