The Time is Now: The New Tangente from NOMOS Glashütte Raises Funds for Doctors Without Borders

A new version of the Tangente, the Glashütte-based brand’s most popular watch model, aims to use your wrist to spread the word of a better future for all.

Food security issues and world hunger crises are snowballing daily. However, the situation has only been exacerbated in 2022. There are several reasons for this. One is that Ukraine, once the fourth-largest grain exporter before the Russian invasion, had been prevented from shipping approximately 20 million metric tons of grain earmarked for export due to the Russian blockade of its ports. The war has caused food prices to skyrocket by 40% across Africa, flour prices to rise by 42% in Yemen, and bread prices to double in Syria.

In fact, when Russia lifted its blockade on July 22, the FAO food price index (the UN’s measure of world food prices) fell by nearly 9% almost immediately. Add to that worsening climate change, which has caused unparalleled drought and worldwide crop failures, and there is little mystery as to why an estimated 800 million people around the globe (many of them children) are starving.

“In one week alone, we admitted almost 1,000 children to our outpatient therapeutic feeding program. Thirty percent of them were suffering from severe acute malnutrition,” Bakri Abubakr, Program Director for the medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders in Somalia, recently reported.

Faced with these facts, NOMOS Glashütte has decided to help.

Red Alert

With a simple and strikingly distinct special version of its most-popular wristwatch, the Tangente, NOMOS Glashütte intends to raise awareness about the need for emergency aid, encouraging even more people to support Doctors Without Borders a.k.a. Médecins Sans Frontières.

Plus, in addition to the brand making a generous contribution to the organization, each purchase of the new Tangente 38 – 50 ans de Médecins Sans Frontières model represents a direct $100 addition to the charity’s coffers, without additional deductions. Moreover, the price of the special limited edition is the same as the standard Tangente timepiece, $2,030.

Still a classic, harmonious, steel 38mm Tangente, this special limited edition includes a small inscription honoring the organization along 6 o’clock. Furthermore, in a subtle yet knowing call to action, an eye-catching red 12 index on the dial in the bold hue of Doctors Without Borders enhances the overall artfulness of the minimalist design while reminding the wearer of the humanitarian cause.

Pricing & Availability

Based on the storied NOMOS Glashütte Alpha manual-wind movement that provides 43 hours of power reserve, the Tangente 38 – 50 ans de Médecins Sans Frontières (Ref. 165.S50) is priced at $2,030, limited to 2,021 pieces, and presented on a soft grey textile strap.
