My Fair Lady: A Woman's Take On The New Breitling Navitimer Automatic 35
As announced during our HOMEtime Live interview with Breitling CEO, Georges Kern, today, Breitling launched their 2020 novelties, including a smaller sized re-edition of the iconic Navitimer in a bid to seduce female collectors.
The love story between Breitling and women did not start today. The brand was seen on the wrists of glamorous women as early as the Sixties when actress Raquel Welch wore her Co-Pilot in the movie Fathom. Most of the brand's watches are already easily wearable by ladies, but the brand wanted to recreate an icon, with our tastes in mind.
The Navitimer’s Elegant Side
When you think of Breitling, the Navitimer is the first watch that comes to mind. The beaded rotating bezel with its slide rule has been on the wrist of pilots and celebrities since the Fifties. It is only natural that the brand would use this collection to entice women. Taking inspiration from the Navitimer Ref. 806 and Ref. 66, it is just a smaller interpretation of the icon. As Breitling CEO Georges Kern said, "With the Navitimer Automatic 35, we have created a watch that reflects what women have been telling us: They've asked for a stylish, smaller Navitimer that doesn't sacrifice heritage or functionality. It needed to be recreated just for women and suitable for any occasion."
The smaller size doesn't mean a loss of performance. After all, this new 35mm watch is powered by the same automatic Breitling Calibre 17 as the 41mm version, which means it offers a 38-hour power reserve and is COSC-certified. The timepiece is also a bit thinner than the 41mm version, but only by 0.08mm. The brand made sure to only make minimal changes, keeping the icon alive, and allowing women to enjoy a watch that would be a perfect fit on their wrist.
A Legend for Every Taste
When Breitling created this timepiece, the brand's goal was to meet the needs and wishes of the modern woman. The Navitimer Automatic 35 will be available with a selection of colorful or mother-of-pearl dials. The watch is perfectly legible thanks to its clean three-handed dial with hour and minute hands coated with Super-Luminova. The watch is suitable for every occasion and every wrist, and, especially, for those who never before considered Breitling an option.
The Breitling Navitimer Automatic 35 will be available in steel, two-tone, and even in a gorgeous rose gold paired with a mother of pearl dial that is accentuated by the "Chatons" diamond hour markers. To make the gold version even more elegant and precious, it comes with a rose gold bracelet. The steel version is offered with either a silver, blue, or salmon dial and is coupled with matching alligator straps.
Finals thoughts
While the 41mm and 43mm were already quite wearable for us ladyfolk, I am happy that the Navitimer now comes in a smaller and more elegant size. That said, I'm afraid that the 35mm is just a skosh too small for me. Were it an option, I would probably prefer a 38mm to 39mm. Although, it is hard to tell from pictures alone. I cannot wait to see the watches in person and be able to try them to get a better opinion.
Finally, the diamonds make the timepiece look more refined and precious, and the mother of pearl gives the elegance that ladies have been asking for.
Personally, Breitling watches have always been appealing to me. And with the new Navitimer Automatic 35, I believe Breitling has answered some of our prayers.
