G-SHOCK and Bamford Watch Department (BWD) have just announced their first collaboration: the Limited Edition G-SHOCK 5610. This limited edition timepiece is a bit of a surprise as the London-based Bamford is best known for its customized versions of high-end brands like Zenith, TAG Heuer, and Girard-Perregaux.

But neither is it a shocking partnership because the one thing G-SHOCK shares with those aforementioned maisons is a hardcore collector base. Even if you’re not a committed member of the G-SHOCK community, there are many reasons you will want to pick up this watch.

The Background

In a press release, George Bamford, the founder of BWD, said that partnering with G-SHOCK had been on his wish list for a while. “I am a huge fan of the brand,” Bamford said, “and have a treasured collection of their watches. I am honoured to have the opportunity to be able to add our own inspiration and design input to this true classic.”

The G-SHOCK is a timepiece that transcends watch snobbery. You can own an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and a G-SHOCK GA-2100 “CasiOak,” and even the haughtiest watch aficionado will give you the thumbs up. Happily, the Limited Edition G-SHOCK 5610 is priced at just £149.00. It’s a stylish and solid piece of technology that pretty much anyone can afford.

The Look

The Limited Edition G-SHOCK 5610 is, first and foremost, a celebration of the watch’s heritage. Inspired by the original G-SHOCK case shape, BWD and G-SHOCK used the distinctive, rectangular case shape of the 5600 series, which was first released in 1983.

The rest of the components are made up of more modern-day elements. For example, the matte black surface of the 43mm resin case is broken up by BWD’s highly legible (and signature) aqua blue fill spelling out “G-SHOCK” and “PROTECTION.” The outer ring is also embellished with the unmistakable Bamford blue, along with Bamford’s signature in the iconic 1980s era Casio font at 6 o’clock.

The most noticeable change to the classic G-SHOCK design is in the digital dial display. The standard black LCD numerals on a light grey background have been flipped. As the British might say, it’s a cheeky way to reference Bamford’s emblematic blacked out dials.

Even the strap gets a bespoke Bamford-style update. The inside of the bracelet has the same aqua blue hue, while the outside is signed by both brands on the accordion-style strap. It’s a nice, personalized touch.

The Toughness

Of course, the most enduring thing about G-SHOCK’s legacy is its reliability. The Bamford X G-SHOCK Limited Edition G-SHOCK 5610 comes equipped with the same dependable shock resistance and 200-meter depth rating as the standard 5600 series G-SHOCK. And it can resist low temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (winter is coming).

The Uniqueness

The launch of the Bamford x G-SHOCK Limited Edition 5610 provides enthusiasts with an opportunity to get a rare signature timepiece at an exceptional price point.

Though a limited edition, the exact number of pieces to be produced has not been announced yet. But we do know that this rarity will be available exclusively through authorized dealers in the United Kingdom starting September 17, 2020, at an MSRP of £149.

Bamford Watch Department does ship worldwide, however. So, for more information, visit bamfordwatchdepartment.com.
