We love watchmakers like Eberhard & Co. because while they fly under the radar of the mainstream, their history is as rich and deep as many of their competitors. Who, in a room full of fellow watch collectors doesn’t want to stand out in the crowd? Who doesn’t want to tell a story that hasn’t been heard a million times before? And who doesn’t want to wear a timepiece that even non-watch nerds stop to admire?

Drivers Seat

Which brings us back to Eberhard & Co.’s latest offerings—the Nuvolari Legend and Scafograf GMT 'The Black Sheep.' Both delve deep into the brand’s history but with designs that look and feel a little different than other heritage homages.

Let’s start with the story of Tazio Nuvolari

Nuvolari was a fixture motorsport between 1920 and the late ‘40s. The Italian racer started out with motorcycles and then moved on to sports cars and single-seaters. Ferdinand Porsche called Nuvolari "the greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future” but his fans knew him as “The Flying Mantaun.” He recorded 150 victories in including two Mille Miglias, two Targa Florios, two RAC Tourist Trophies, the 24-hour Le Mans, and a European Championship in Grand Prix racing.

Nuvolari also had a reputation for being difficult because his passion for the sport took precedence over everything, including relationships, reason, and even personal health (he was still racing when he died of a stroke in 1953). Yet, despite these accomplishments, over the years, Nuvolari’s legend had begun to dim. So 30 years ago, Eberhard & Co. created a collection to celebrate the man that even the brand called “impetuous, at times overbearing.”

Sport Chic

Nuvolari, a champion of technical perfection on the track, wore an Eberhard in everyday life. The Tazio Nuvolari collection is meant to capture a sports chic vibe. And while many versions have been added to it over the years, the newest, Nuvolari Legend, goes back to the essence of the sportsman and elegance of his era.

Nuvolari Legend is an automatic timepiece cased in stainless steel and, available in two sizes: 39.5 mm and 43 mm in the Grande Taille version. The dial is black with luminescent Arabic numerals. There’s a minutes counter at 12 o’clock, an hour at 6 o'clock, and a spiral tachometer scale in km/hr in the centre. This lends it a nice retro (but readable) face.

Nuvolari Legend is also a hardy, everyday wearer. The model is water resistant down to a depth of 30m. And the movement which is decorated with a checkerboard pattern inspired by the race start flag and a historic accurate Alfa Romeo Type 12C in which the great driver got many victories. All this can be viewed through a transparent sapphire crystal base.

The ‘vintage’ look of the new timepiece is enhanced by the matching antiqued leather strap. This model is also available with a steel Charme bracelet. Nuvolari Legend: the legend continues with a retro-flavoured model.

BAA BAA Black Sheep

The other great new sporty offering from Eberhard is the Scafograf GMT 'The Black Sheep.' After the success of the Scafograf 300, first presented in 2016 and winner of the ‘Sports Watch Prize’ at the prestigious Geneva Grand Prix d'Horlogerie (GPHG). In 2017, Eberhard launched a GMT version, and this year it’s the Limited Edition 'The Black Sheep' version.

The main thing about this delightfully disruptive GMT is that it is soooooo black, The 43mm steel case is treated with a DLC coating. The dial and two-way rotating bezel with ceramic insert and luminescent indices are also in black. The only pop of color comes from the orange of the GMT hand and GMT lettering.

Actual divers might find this a palette impractical, but as a GMT watch, it certainly is stylish. The screw down case back is uniquely customized, featuring a stylised hemisphere with time zones and the engraved name of the model.

It’s a somewhat unconventional GMT, being all black and all. But again, that’s Eberhard’s thing —watches for folks who want project their taste and style rather than just wearing a status symbol. Hence the name ‘black sheep.’

Only 500 Scafograf GMT 'The Black Sheep' will be produced. The Black Sheep is powered by an automatic movement with triple time zone function. It’s 100 meters water resistant, and comes with a rubber integrated strap, in black or orange, signed with the ‘E’ coat of arms, it’s also available with A steel, DLC-treated bracelet.

Value Proposition

The Nuvolari Legend and the Scafograf Black Sheep May do not have fancy in-house calibers, but they still feature finely finished modified movements. The advantage to consumers is, of course, a more accessible price and the handsome appearance of vintage without having to worry about the maintenance of vintage.
