Watchonista Redux: That Time We Interviewed Michael Schumacher

Watchonista Redux: That Time We Interviewed Michael Schumacher

We’ve interviewed our fair share of legends, but nothing can compare to a chat with the all-time F1 legend, Michael Schumacher.

Revisiting Watchonista’s archives is one of my favorite pastimes. From in-depth columns retracing the once polarizing topic of silicon hairsprings to fireside chats with Hollywood hunks Brad Pitt and Chris Hemsworth. If you spend enough time on Watchonista, there is something for everyone. One such article is a 2012 piece by our friend Agnus Davies (read HERE).

In this article, we attend the 2012 launch event of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Michael Schumacher Limited Edition. Fresh off his final Formula One race, Michael Schumacher attended a boutique event on a brisk October evening. From all accounts, Schumacher was warm and engaging with the assembled crowd and event took a moment to chat with Agnus Davies about what it meant to be a legend.

A self-professed fan of Audemars Piguet, Schumacher was impressed by the technical prowess of the Le Brassus based watchmaker. Our story points that Schumacher took the added step of visiting the manufacture during the production of his limited edition, with Schumacher adding, “To see what happens inside a watch is something I like a lot.”

Less than a year after we published this article, Schumacher suffered injuries in a tragic skiing accident in the French Alps. While his family has kept his condition a private matter, fans of the F1 legend continue to remember him for his seven World Championships and 91 wins. Records that still stand today. The only person currently capable of matching or beating Schumacher’s records is Lewis Hamilton – who we had the pleasure of interviewing in 2018 (read HERE).
