The Unlikely Watch Collector: Madonna
The Queen of Pop has shaped our music and fashion tastes for over four decades, but what are her choices when it comes to wristwear?
Madonna’s singing and songwriting career spans four decades, holding multiple world records for her music. She is both the highest-grossing solo touring artist, with $1.3 billion earned, and the most successful female recording artist, with 300 million records sold. Madonna also won Best Actress at the Golden Globes in 1997 for her role in Evita, and has written 19 children’s books, making her an all-around global superstar.
Her Sense Of Style
Madonna is not only recognized for her work, but also her unique sense of style and iconic looks. The wedding dress that she wore in her performance of Like a Virgin at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards comes to mind, as does the cone-shaped bra designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, worn during her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990. She has also shown a love of accessories over the years. We have seen her wear big bows and hundreds of bracelets worn at the same time, but what does she like in the watch department?
Philip Stein And Oprah
Philip Stein’s natural frequency watch has proven to be one of Madonna’s favorites. Legend has it that she first saw a Philip Stein watch on a flight attendant (Philip Stein has always been very popular in the travel industry, thanks to its dual dials and separate time zones on the same analog watch). She inquired about it and the attendant showed her the advertisement in the SkyMall magazine.
Madonna not only purchased a couple of the watches for herself, but she also gifted one to Oprah. Oprah loved the watch so much that she presented it on her show as one of her Favorite Things, giving the brand an additional boost.
Jacob & Co. And The Angel Watch
Madonna is often seen wearing her Jacob and Co. Angel timepiece that she bought for herself. This two time zone wristwatch has analog indications, one above the other, and is set with brilliant-cut diamonds. Madonna also wore a Jacob & Co. one-of-a-kind diamond mesh glove at the premiere of her documentary, Madonna: The MDNA Tour, showing her love for the New York-based watch and jewelry brand.
The Cartier Panthère started to be seen on Madonna’s wrist during the 1990s, when she was dating Carlos Leon. It was at this time that minimalism was fashionable. Gone were all the stacked bracelets; just the yellow gold Cartier Panthère adorned her wrist.
She is said to have gifted one to the singer Alanis Morissette, who was at the top of the pop charts at the time with her album Jagged Little Pill. The Panthère model was discontinued by Cartier in 2004, only to be reinstated in 2017 when the brand noticed how popular they were, as vintage Panthères were starting to become fashionable again.
Hermès Cape Cod And The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Paparazzi photos have revealed other gorgeous timepieces on Madonna’s wrist, including a Hermès Cape Cod with a double tour black strap and a black dial, as well as a gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona that she wore during a trip to Malawi.
From the wellness functions of the Philip Stein, to the diamond-set Jacob & Co. Angel, and the more classic Cartier, Hermès and Rolex timepieces, this is quite an eclectic collection. But one thing is for sure - the Material Girl certainly knows how to rock her own style when it comes to choosing a timepiece.
